PCM-1 vs Mod SBM-1 w/ JK Labs set up
« on: February 08, 2005, 07:22:02 PM »
Here's what I run now:
CK61s>actives>JK Labs DVC>Mod SBM-1>D8

Most of the shows I go to require stealth save for DMB and now apparetnly the black crows again.  What are people's opinions if I went with this instead:

ck61s>actives>JK Labs DVC>M1

How much quality in sound would I be sacrificing.  Its a bitch trying to sneak in the DVC, the sbm-1 and the deck and more than a few times I have so many wires and stuff jammed in my pocket something comes loose and I loose the signal.  This happened at the Pearl Jam show in Reading and it sucked, a lot.  I just wanna know what people think.

I don't really know enough about the sound of the DVC pre, but in general the (mod)SBM1 fattens up the sound, makes it beefier and fuller. I've ran V2>D100 (which has the same A/D as the M1) as well as V2>(mod)SBM1>D100 and the difference was night and day. The (mod)SBM1 gave the bright, airy sounding V2 some balls.

Hope that helps, but again, not sure of the sonics of the DVC to say one way or another.

depends on the type of show though...bassy rock shows when you are way fob, the mod sbm1 can make the tape boomy as hell and in those cases, the M1/D100 A/D can be preferable in my experience

Of course, if you have a t-mod mod-sbm, then that should be better than the d100/m1 under all conditions.

Test it!

I'd bet you'd lose a lot of warmth though... my Oade Mod SBM-1 really warms up the recordings... but, whether the loss of warmth is the same as a loss of quality is a subjective matter.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.
