Topic: new to the game...

i've been a fan of live shows for as long as i can remember.  i like how live shows are always more spontaneous, and just seem to have a little "something else", as opposed to studio recordings.  don't get me wrong, studio recordings are cool, but live shows are never the same twice.  okay, on to the point...

i'm pretty new to the whole taping scene, but have been to a lot of cool concerts and wished afterwards that i could have a recording of it.  i've known that it's possible, but always mis-believed that there wasn't any feasible way for me to do it.

i have been looking into getting a somewhat stealthy setup.  i don't plan on doing any illegal recording, i just want to keep the size of the setup down.

from what i've seen, there are many many different options.  rather than spending money on something i'm unsure about, i wanted to get some advice.

i was hoping that the tapers here might be willing to tell me of their "tried and true" setups (good, but not necessarily of audiophile quality) that i could/should look into and give me a ballpark price as to how much it would cost to get something similar.

someone told me to look into giant squid audio lab's omni-stereo mic because they're small but supposedly can record with good quality... any other opinions?

you can get better than that look in to the AT mic line like at853s or 943s and do lots of searching on here and you can find what your looking for

For your budget stay away from them, much much better options can be had

yes it is possible, whether you mean to store files, or actually record them, the answer is yes, storage is easy but i don't know why you wouldn't get an external HD.  As for recording, there is a way to hack your ipod to do it, it is potentially dangerous to your ipod, and the quality and reliablility is severely questionable.  I would rather run an analog tape than my ipod.  but my .02 cents

i dont know much about minidisc stuff but it does not sound good to me BUT like i said i dont know ANY thing about  minidiscs

njb3, no switching discs, no buying media, lighting quick transfers, easy adjustment of levels and its not much more expensive at all.

Get a Nomad Jukebox 3 (njb3) to store the recording. There's some refurbs on ebay again for $150. But then you would need something that puts out optical signal. I know your looking for a 'stealth' setup, but if you go to a lot of shows and you like to have fun, dance around a little, grab a beer during the show, whatever, you may want to look at some bigger mics / stand. Check out the AKG's (c1000's) well within your budget along with all the other misc items needed.

Very good starter/used often/popular/smallish/tried and true rig. Could save some dough and get a little cheaper mics at soundprofessionals.com if you wanted.

I have a HiMD and I have recently received a new JB3 (thanks to  caymanreview !  ) which I should try tonight. Main advantage of MD/HiMD if your stealthing is size and weight. Only new HiMD (vs 'standard' MD) will record uncompressed. Transfer is much easier with JB3 and you don't have media.
