Might be...too much beer?

Did you hit Record>Play so the thing would actually start recording...or just record...

Assuming you saw time tick off on the D8 counter?

One trick I learned to help reduce misloads is to turn on the light on your deck before you insert the tape, then stick in the tape and close the door.  If the light goes off while loading the tape then the deck momentarily powered down, which is usually a sign of a misload.  If the light stays on, I'm not sure this means 100% of the time that you are okay, so I'd still advise recording 5-10 seconds of crowd or whatever and then replay quickly to make sure it actually recorded - if so then you know it loaded correctly.

The dreaded misload ... I'll record an minute of sound, rewind abit, hit play, if you see levels, you are good to go ...
