Soundcard question?
« on: March 18, 2005, 02:21:12 PM »
I know next to nothing about computers.  couple of questions here  1) are all sound cards compatabile w my pc(hp pavilion a400n)  and 2) do I really need a 24/96 if I record in 16/44.1  I've been doing transfers on my stand alone burner but want to get a friends band on the archive so it's time to nut up and get a soundcard.  Will be using it to record on soundforge 7 if that makes any difference.

if you have a standard computer with open PCI slots (those areas on the back panel near the bottom where the modem and internet cables go, remove the cover and the filler insert and simply pop the card in an open slot) then you should be o.k.

You don't really need 24/96 capability, but most bit-perfect cards on the market will have this capability anyway, so it is a non issue. Glad you stepped up to a card. Life's to short for cd rips :P

no sweat. don't pay more than $100 though. lots of great cards go new and used for under that.

look into the M Audio Delta Dio Series, I have the 24/96 Dio card and it works great, Or the audiophile is another similiar card. In the range of about $150.

M-Audio Revolution 5.1-at newegg for under $80,is about the best buy for real quality. You always want to be aware of static charge issues. Much of the puters innards are sensitive to static electricity which your body can have a charge-you won't feel, but a soundcard, ram chip,or cpu will. Leave your machine plugged in (to a proper grounded outlet) and OFF-then just touching the bare metal of the case grounds you, discharges any static, and its safe then to handle the electronics.

Another point-the brand-HP of the whole puter is less relevant than what CPU and Motherboard are inside

I've got M-Audio Revolution 5.1 and it's a great card for it's price (however, I paid $120 for it  >:( ).

This card is universal, which means it will work with any narrow (32bit PCI) slot - 33/66MHz 3,3/5V
