Topic: Looking to break into DAT taping

1st post here- hope this is the right forum!
I've video and audio taped a few shows (mostly friends bands) over the years using different methods but I'm looking to go either the DAT or MD route.
I found this setup for sale and was wondering 2 things about it.
1- Is this a good starter DAT setup?
2- What would be a fair price to offer/how much is too much to pay?

Here is the info-
Sony PCM M1 DAT recorder, used very little, with Core Sound Binaural mics (with bass roll off filter) and related accesories including 7 pin to SPDIF cables, USB computer audio connector, manuals, A/C Adapter, and aluminum field case. I used this rig to record live music. The mics are tiny but very good. The tape deck is the second of this model that I've used, it has only been used for a couple of shows.

IMO, avoid DAT and get either a HD or CF/SD based recorder.. you will thank yourself when it comes time to transferring after..

Well I cannot speak for the quality of the mics, but the DAT model is excellent and service is available from www.prodigitalinc.com if ever needed.  Review of this model and newer decks found listed at: www.sonicstudios.com/tips.htm

 I suggest avoiding MD altogether for Sony has made this format VERY taper unfriendly in several ways.

IMO, avoid DAT and get either a HD or CF/SD based recorder.. you will thank yourself when it comes time to transferring after..

Poster has a point with considering newer technology decks, but suggest avoiding HD based decks as not so easy to power, and most with adequate features/preamp quality are not small or inexpensive.

For newest flash deck,  R-09 seems best yet for being practical for easy long running powering on 2 AA anytype cells, smallest size so far, and quite affordable.

I checked a little into HD recorders but size and price made me afraid of jumping in.I also may have to stealth some shows so small is a must!
I will look into CF/SD recorders.

I will look into jb3 as well- just did a little research and they look like they could fit my needs!

So any advice on what a fair price for this dat setup would be?

another thing to remember is that with dat, you ahve to do a real time transfer from DAT to Cd.   with the compact flast/SD/hard drive recorders, you just drag them via using USB/Firewire.
