opinions needed for "best" AKG300's > UA-5 combo
« on: April 21, 2005, 01:21:40 PM »
Hey yall....
I'm currently running the w-UA5 w/ the akg 391''s/93's combo.  This is my first rig ever so I don't have much to compare to but here is my question.  I've read somewhere that AKGs are "warm" mics or "hot" mics (don't really know what that means)...but it seems (to me) that the w-mod akg combo sounds a bit "muddy" to me.

I have really only recorded mofro (which tends to be bass heavy).  Also should mention that the acoustics of both venues that I taped in sucked ass (very small bars/ w low ceilings).   The mofro off the soundboard w/ the W-mod sounded killer.

Questions:
1.  Is there a good place where I can read up on what a "warm"/ "hot" mic is?

2.  Anyone ran P or T mod- ua5 (akg 300) combos....what are your opinins?  is there a general concensus on what combo sounds better?

3.  What does the "T's" I see in all the posts mean.  is it short for "thanks"

Thanks for the help.

Before you go trading in the Pre there are some things to consider, first you say the acoustics were poor in the venues in which youve taped recently.  Which capsules did you use and what Technique for the mics?
Yes, but what do you HEAR?

I taped some shows with 393/91's into a stock UA-5 and also a Tmod+ UA-5.  I really liked the sound with the T-mod.  It was certainly an improvement over the stock UA-5.  I never ran them with a W or P mod, but I'm sure there are plenty of tapes out there to give you an idea of the sound that produces.  Of course, "best" is a highly subjective term, but I really liked the sound they have with the T-mod.

I use a pmod w/ 91/93's and I like it a lot. Nice bass, not to over powering, real smooth recordings...

I have been using the 393's with DIN config.  Mostly about 20-25feet from stage.
Last show I taped the config was DIN, DFC, 10' about 15 feet from the suspended stacks.  sounded "muddy" to me.  So I guess another question is.....should I have used the 91's (cards) instead of the 93's when I am only 15 feet from the stacks in a DIN config?

Is there a minimum distance rule of thumb for Hypers?

Thanks for the help.

No, the hypers are the right choice.  You may want to try an X/Y Technique.  A coincident setup like that helps the High end "Stick".  Keep in mind that in a poor sounding room unless you've found the utter sweet spot then the resulting recording is usually an accurate reproduction of a poor  sounding room with people taliking over the mix and the sound of beer bottles.  Since you were dealing with a low ceiling then you can't get the mics over the heads of the folks standing around which smears the sound and deadens it... Stand on a beer box or chair in the middle of a show to get an idea of just how much difference it makes.   In a small bar setting like that I've found the best way to get a decent tape is to get in early and clamp the mics to the ceiling.  That allows you to get in the exact sweet spot without worrying about people knocking into the rig.  Really take the time to listen at the spot where you're taping and realize that you're only able to pull what is out there!  Picking the spot is your best way to get the tape you want.

All that being said...  The T Mod box does have a faster, slightly brighter sound.  I've made Fantastic tapes using the 483's->WarmMod UA-5 in bars.  It really is about the placement (and the sound engineer)
Yes, but what do you HEAR?
