PDA Audio newbie rig help
« on: March 24, 2005, 11:59:58 AM »
Hello,

I'm trying to put together a PDA stealth rig. I would like to record 3 hours max of 16 bit 44.1 audio. I am not looking for the best PDA out there... all I need is one that will get the job done. Any help is appreciated. Memory card advise, audio interfaces, etc. Thanks a lot!

Check the core sounds website.  They have rig recommendations.  You are pretty much limited to one of the IPAQ PDAs.  I think one of the Toshiba  and one of the Dell models will also work.  As far as I know, the only PDA audio interface is the Core Sounds PDAudio-CF card.  For 16/44.1 recording, you need 2gb of storage for 3 hours of recording.  PDAudio works perfectly at 16/44 with just about and memory card or micro-drive.

If I were doing 16/44 only, I'd look for a PDA that had a CF and a SD slot.  The PDAudio card would go in the CF slot and the SD slot would be used for the recording media.  1gb SD cards go for around $60.  This would be an ideal stealth rig.  The only drawback is that you are limited to SD cards for recording media.  Currently, the largest SD available is 2gb.  Thus, this rig is not very practical for 24 bit recording.  If you think you may evantually want to record 24 bit, then get an IPAQ that supports expansion packs.  You'll need a dual CF expansion sleeve and a 1-2 gb CF card.

I would not bother with a micro-drive (even though I currently use one).  They are too fragile and power hungry due to having moving parts.  With a CF or SD card for storage, you probably won't need external power to run for 3 hours.

The only software to use for the PDAudio rig is Live2496 by Gidluck Mastering.  Don't even bother with any of the other software packages on the market.

I have an IPAQ 5555(the exact one listed in the signature above) that I was trying to go with...but financial situations have limited me right now....its less than a year old....pm me if interested...we can def negotiate on the price...

this one is perfect condition...i used it mainly for school/work(light use for calendar and address book and some notes) I have everything that came with it..plus some extras.
