Newbie needs help. Again.
« on: April 29, 2005, 09:20:01 PM »
Hi guys. You all have a great forum here. Quick newbie qusetion. I am going to Jazzfest this weekend, and on the spur of the moment I decided to try and tape a little bit. I will be recording onto a JB3, which from what I have read, definitely needs power between the mic and the recorder. Well, since I am leaving tomorrow and have no time for mail order, I am trying to find a store local to me that would carry such items. No luck. I went to Fry's Electronics, got a Sony ECM-719 mic because it said it had the option of either plug-in power or a battery. I thought I would be good since the mic would be powered by a battery, but when I try to record, I get nothing. In fact, I get a very faint signal when I have the plug-in power option turned on, but nothing when using the battery. My question is, is there a mic within the ECM line that is capable of enough power to record a concert, or am I sol? Fry's seems to carry several different Sony ECM mics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Apology for any redunancy.

forget trying to tape it yourself, you won't be able to find the necessary components.  go to an electronics store such as radio shack and get an 1/8" to 1/8" stereo cable, and try patching from another taper at jazz fest.  most likely there will be tapers at any show you're going to see.  get there early and ask nicely if you can get a patch.  record line in and you'll be set.

Damn. Thanks for the reply. I guess I will try to get a patch off someone, but I don't like to bother people.

Ok. Well I am going to take back the ECM-719 and go to Guitar Center in the morning. Gonna see if they have a Rolls MX34. I have a pair of Joe Meek JM27s that I use for overhead mics on my drums. I can use those with the Rolls MX34. Since that won't be stealth, I can only tape one show that I am attending. Oh well.

Do you think I can find one of those big tall mic stands at Guitar Center?
