Topic: Tapeing first show tonight a few questions

I just bought some equipment and am tapeing the Crows tonight from the front row in Gulfport MS. This being my first recording im sure it will
be sub par but just incase im making any big mistakes maybe one of you guys can cath it before hand.

Sony MZ-RH10
rec mode PCM
Rec Level MANUAL also have the rm-mc40elk to check/change levels during show (not to sure where I need levels to be steady at first dot or peaking at first dot)
mic agc set to For Loud Music
mic sens set to High

Mics
Core Sound Binunirals with switchable battery box filter on
My bigest concern is mic placement I am wearing a baseball cap with the mics cliped at the base of the hat where the bill meets the band the mics face up about 45 degress and out about 20 kind of looks like this from the front \___/  with this\ / being the mics and this the bill___ with the way the clips are attached to the capsules its impossable to get the mics to face forward in a solid way. There is 7 1/2 inchs of seperation I am 6'2" so if standing the mics should be up high enough. Is this going to be good or do I need to come up with something better? I know making good recordings is mostly trial and error I just want to make as few errors as possable on my first recording. Thanks for any help.

if you are having a concern with your mic placement. an alternative on your hat is to clip them to the air holes on the top of the hat if the clips fit there. if not cut the hat a little bit to make them fit! enjoy the concert and good luck with your recording. I hope if comes out well for you.

First tape didnt come out the way I hoped. I just gave it a once over and it seems to be real distorted in the mid's. I think I had the manual level up to high. I kept it at the first dot and peaking past. Is there anything I can do in cool edit or something to make it more listenable? I will transfer it tommrow and torent it if anyone wants to give it a listen and tell me what went wrong.

sound like some brickwalling. where did you put the mics? in your hat holes? might have tried to keep them on the outside of your head, better spacing, just a guess though.

The bold items above aren't necessary with line-in & manual levels, in any case you would most likely want the mic sens at Low for loud volume situations.

mic location was ideal. lucky bastard bein' 6'2. the settings on your MD were way off, though.

That's like a walking mic stand........I'm 5'6 and wish I had my mics up higher at times.

its alright for your first tape experience. mine was with a big ass cassette recorder you can buy at Meijer. and the quality is unlistenable. I would like to hear a clip though.  did you clip the mics on your hat bill or open the air holes on the top? also I should have caught that always put your mic sens. on LOW.

its also great being tall for shows. 6'4....

Think I know one thing I should have set different is the mic sens had them on high. Is there anything else I could have done to make a better recording? Now that I have this recording what can be done if anything to make it sound better.

well with Sony MD's its pretty hard to tell the levels. if you went over the first dot you might want the shows to peak at the first dot. then if you need to boost the sound in cool edit or whatever you use...

yeah.. transfer the recording low into your HD. or reduce the amplitude later if its already on your HD.

Well I think I have gotten some good info on how not to make such bad recordings. I should have used line in instead of mic in, mic sens low with manual record levels. Does this sound like the way to go on my next recording?

thats what i do.. set the levels around 18, and adjust from there.
