Newbie Help Please!
« on: May 18, 2005, 02:23:14 PM »
 ;D

Greetings all.  I was referred to this board by someone while asking about taping.  I'm looking to set something up, however, I'm pretty clueless about this stuff.

What I want to do is be able to record both live performances and practices from my band.  We're a four piece: two guitars, drums, and bass.

What I currently have in mind is using an Edirol UA25 to record to a laptop.  I've seen many good things about the UA-25 on this board, however I've also read that there are versions of this unit with mods that help the sound quality.  What are these mods and how would I get them?
Power to the laptop and UA25 will not be a problem.
I'm hoping to be able to get out of this with $100 mics.  Can you get quality recordings with mics in this price range?  I've been looking at the Marshal MXL2006 or the M-Audio Nova.  Any advice on this?  Are there better mics in this price range?

The other option I was thinking about was not getting the UA25 and springing for a couple of more expensive mics to use with an ancient analog 4-track recorder we have, and ultimately moving up to a digital 4-track.  This way we could nab a soundboard mix along with the audience mix.  Thoughts on this?

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks.

i htink you mean teh UA5 unless i missed the discussion where Doug said he'd modify the ua25?

and if that's the case, there are literally TONS of threads about this unit, how it can be used, and all different kinds setups with it.

try a search.

oh.....and Welcome to TS.com! :)

Sorry, just some confusion there.

It'll be the ua-25 I'm looking into.

for about 250-300 you can get some real nice c-4s which are great mics for starters. maybe the sony ecm ms907 is around 100 bucks, but honestly , it sucks.
you get what you pay fer.Especially in this hobby ive found. The c4s are an exception, imho

Its funny you mention the C4s.  I've spent the last few days researching this stuff, reading this board, and asking everyone I can about it...and I just purchased a pair of C4s about 10 minutes ago.   ;D
So I'm going C4>UA-25>Laptop.

Can't wait till the stuff gets here to try it out.
