help!!! first time archive uploader needs you expertise...
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:46:15 PM »
 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

OK, I got all my naming squared away, made flac fingerprint, generated MD5, Made a text file that looks like every one I've seen, Ftp went smooth, but now the directions don't seem to make sense.

you see the band I'm trying to upload has no other shows listed,  I know they want them listed cause' they were on the list in the thread that circulated a couple of months ago about bands wanting tapers.  They are listed on Archive and theire policy is openly stated. But archive is telling me that my abbreviation is not afilliated with the band.  when I follow the links to fix it my abbv is already there!  What's going on??  I just want other people to know about this great band...

here is cut and paste, what I am seeing when I should be seeing a red Describe link:

"Directory: /pgrass-2005-05-01.flac16
Band Abbreviation: pgrass
Show Date: 2005-05-01

The abbreviation pgrass is not yet associated with any artist. If the band or artist that performed this concert already has an entry in the list of bands, you can associate this abbreviation with a band. Otherwise you will have to add the band."

HELP PLEASE...

What's the name of the band? Email one of the mods (Diana Hamilton on here is one) and ask them to associate the abbreviation "pgrass" with whatever band it is. Otherwise, you'll have to rename all your files to whatever abbreviation's currently associated with the band.

Example: You upload a show with the abbreviation derektrucks2005-07-31, but the abbreviation for Derek Trucks Band is dtb...you'll eiither have to get the mods to associate "derektrucks" with Derek Trucks Band, or change your file names to "dtb2005-07-31".

Make sense?

As long as the band is active, you can add abbreviations yourself.

There is a link in the import section to do it.

I did not see a band on the list that fits the pgrass abbrev though.

ok I think I figured this out.  pgrass is associated with pencilgrass already but my files look like this "pgrass-2005-05-01..."  I think the errror is in the first hyphen between pgrass and 2005.  now how do I fix it.  do I have to fix it on my puter and re upload or is there a page at archive where I can re name a file???

thanks for all the help

go through your ftp program and rename the files. When you do this you need to reupload the md5 file so the file names match. Then import your file.

Yup, don't md5 the .txt or .ffp, or the archive's contribution engine will choke and tell you there's a problem.

ok here's the newest problem...  I'm so Jerry Springer...  I dl'd shorten for mac so I can generate a real md5 (Iused my flac fingerprint thinking it was the same thing)  but now The files are mysteriously gone from my puter!!!  The folders are there but they are empty.  So I tried to get them back from archive (cause I can see them when I open my ftp client)  but it wont let me open or move them back to my desktop...   I am thouroughly confused!  I have my flac masters so I could start all over but what a pain.  I'll loose my text file and fingerprint and have to rename all my files and everything.  Ugh...  :'(

1. you might have accidentally (unfortunatley!) had the (default?) setting on for the md5 generator where they delete the source files when they are done. I don't know WHY that would be an option but It might be ..

2. to download from the archive's upload servers just isn't going to happen. there is a ratio safeguard in place to prevent illicit file hosting .. i.e. someone uploads 2 GB of porn or music .. and gives their login and password out on a site, so that others log into that ftp account to d/l it .. the 1000:1 ratio prevents the downloading, just allows uploading. unfortunately for downloading your own files .. it doesn't work well.

but why do you need the files now? .. when the show is public, just download your own files at that time and then you'll ahve the masters back safe and sound!

I'm confused, what is the problem? you have uploaded the flac files of the music, an md5 and a .txt right? ... unfortunately youc an't even d/l the small .md5 or .txt to edit the file names in them to the right ones... but .. i'm not sure what you need ... what is uploaded and what do you not have to finish the job? .. just import the show and when it is public, download the .flac music files to listen to and backup on your own :)

It's a n00b rig, but I still love it, 5 years later! I have no desire whatsoever to 'upgrade'. I figure it does a good enough job doing the task I want it to do (recording the music) so i'd rather take that $1000 and use it elsewhere... ;)
