Flac encoding error
« on: September 10, 2005, 05:21:02 PM »
I have successfully recorded my first SBD pull. I uploaded the giant .wav file from my JB3 to my computer. I ran the file through audacity to check for clipping and to see where the levels peak, everything seems fine. I used CD Wave to track the show over the course of two discs. After saving the individual .wav files with new names corresponding to disc and track number I tried encoding to Flac. I set compression to 5, checked the verify box, and checked the align on sector boundaries box. I seem to be getting an error on the final track of disc 2. Here is what it says:

ARD2005-09-03d02t05.wav  INFO: sector alignment causing 504 zero samples to be appended.

Are these being added to the end of the track or the beginning of the track?
Should I run this through Traders Little Helper to fix the SBE or doesn't it matter (since it might be adding the samples to the end of the track)?
Or should I ditch the files and recut the show adding an additional track as the silence after the show and leaving it out of the recording when encoding to Flac?

Thanks in advance for the responses. If you need additional info please let me know.

It's adding the zero samples to the end of the final track, to completely fill that sector. Everything is fine! :)
Out of the game … for now?

Curious, was this a single set show or a 2 set show?

Curious, was this a single set show or a 2 set show?

This was a single set show but way too long for only one disc. I was told that the error was made by Flac Frontend and it is a bug that has been fixed but not yet released. The bug adds samples to pad the end of the final track but somehow repeats previously used samples from earlier in the track instead of just using zeros. But I'm not too worried because the padding is at the end of the final track. Thanks for everyone looking-out for this newbie.

You can solve this problem easily by cutting the VERY end of the last track off in cdwave.

This was a solution I asked about on another messageboard but it was ignored and the person who responded told me of the minor bug in FLAC frontend.
It seemed way too easy a fix for the problem.
I tried it and everything worked properly; many thanks!
Although, this should be a heads-up for anyone using Flac frontend and padding the end of the final track.

If you use command-line, shntool will tell you which track was padded and with how many bytes.  Not sure what FFE does though...

Here is the response that tells of the minor bug in FLAC frontend:

all that FLAC frontend is doing (via flac.exe) is adding 504 samples of silence to the last track... but here's where it gets complicated. there's a minor bug with FLAC which has been fixed but not released yet (read the last page of the other thread).

so its better to pad the last track using TLH (or shntool) until the next version of flac.exe is released. then use shntool len check to make sure everything is kosher. I know this post will probably give you a headache but once you start using TLH you will catch on quickly and never look back. link is in my signature.
