new mic recomendations.........
« on: September 20, 2005, 12:57:45 PM »
I am in the market for a new set of inexpensive mics and I can't decide between oktava mk 012 and studio project c4's.  any recomendations would be most appreciated.  I have listened to both and they seem pretty comparable.  I like clean transparent sound, durability, adaptabilty.  basicaly I don't want to have to fuck around with my gear all the time I just want it to work and sound good.  I will be running this in front a diy Transparent mod ua5>>optical>>jb3.

thanks,
Kris

I prefer the c4 sound over octavas...then again I may be biased.  Octavas do have hyper caps though, fwiw.  c4 hypers are supposedly coming at some point, but nothing set in stone.
studio projects c4 > edirol ua-5 [digi mod] > Microtrack II

laying around: sp cmc-4, power supply and jb3

there are a number of op amp upgrades that the electronicaly savy can perform.  but you'll also want to do the phantom power caps at the same time.  I believe busman2 on this board is offering his services for sale at a very resonable price.  I wouldn't trust my abilities with someone elses gear...

great point, and IMO, a good hyper cap, or a hyper cap at all, is the best part of any recording setup YMMV

also, the oktavas i believe can get a mod called the dorsey mod, i ran my 481's w/ nick sullivan running his dorsey-mod oktavas and the tapes can barely be heard apart, he was running dorsey-mod oktavas>dmodua5(?)>jb3 and i was running 481>v3>jb3

they both sound sweet!

allright I think I'm gonna jump on a pair of oktavas just for the wider range of caps and then attempt the dorsey mod.  we'll see how it goes...  +T's all around for the suggestions
