Topic: really big njb3 hdd question and others

i was reading the jb3 faq, and it says you can replace the hdd with 2.5" hdd's.  has anyone tried this with a large one like 80-100gb?  i was just wondering b/c the biggest ive seen one come with was 40gb and i dont know if it would have problems accepting the larger ones or not. 

oh, and the faq lies!  it says that if your batteries run out it will save before shutting down, but mine has lost 3 different shows due to battery failure before i had time to switch tracks or shut down.  i have the latest firmware and such, is it just a prob with mine?

one more.........when i was taping the other day my startup screen popped up over the top of my recording screen.  you could see both, and when i scrolled the wheel it went away.  granted this was the first time i had taped since having it outdoors in the heat for a 3 day fest, so would the heat have bothered it?  i havent taped since the other night, but this friday i am so well see if it happens again

No, you're correct - the FAQ lies!  Inital reports indicated the JB3 auto-saved files when the internal batt died, but subsequent users have reported mixed results over time.  I've updated the FAQ to reflect the mixed results.  I doubt you have a problem with yours, I just don't think the feature was implemented effectively.

I've heard of issues about it not saving when the batteries die as well.  I've only run into one instance when mine auto shut down (due to heat, not battery), and it did save.

The first night I ever taped the same thing happened to me.
It was the 4th set of the evening I was taping and the battery died.
The 4th set didn't auto save, Oh well, there is always next time.

I put an 80 gig fuji drive {$99 @ newegg} in my 2nd jb3 and it was easy and works perfectly.  I'm using it mainly as mp3 player although I have taped with it as well.

Here's a great article on how to add a bigger hard drive to your JB3.  They advise against doing it because they broke a couple lines of the LCD screen, but it's still legible.

In the discussion posts in this article there are reports that the IBM travelstar drives do not work.  Good news by blastroknow though, that an 80gb Fujitsu drive will work. 

Does it matter which rpm drive?  I see two speeds for sale, 4200 and 5400.

I took mine apart last night and had the HD out.  It's a Fujitsu MHR2020AT, 4200 RPM, 2 MB cache.  Wish I had a bigger one to pop in there but wasn't the reason for opening it up, see the A/D thread.

Put it back together and it booted up fine.  That article posted below was right though, those screws near the LCD are really hard to get out without touching the glass edge of the LCD.  I think the trick is to remove the two easy screws first.  Then attack the two tough ones at an angle with a small phillips head staying well away from the glass.  Once they get loose you have to allow or pull the HD down on its header connector to allow room for the screws to come up and out without touching the LCD glass.  A small magnet on the phillips helps grab the loose screw for removal.  Same for reinstalling.

You're right, no auto-save when the battery dies, you lose the entire track.
