UA-5 & Win XP Pro Driver and Windows Recording Mixer Issues

Hey,

I have been trying to install drivers for the Edirol UA-5. I searched and found driver version 2.0.0 (includes 44.1 and 96 recording).

The driver seemed to install ok. I am runnng a cassette deck > UA5 (analog in) > USB > Win XP > Cool Edit Pro 2.0.

When recording the signal (comes in fine) I want to control the input level with the Windows Recording Mixer (Service Pack 2).

I go to options within Cool Edit and click on Windows Recording Mixer and nothing appears.

I cannot control the levels (input) with Cool Edit.

I hope someone has had experience with this. If you have any tips, please help.

I THINK you want to control input levels on the analog side via the trim pots on the ua5 so that the gain is set before the signal goes through the ua5's a>d convertor.

Correct. I have done that to the point were the UA-5's peak levels are perfect. I still need to bring the levels higher to get Cool Edits' levels as close as possible to zero.

Doesn't sound like the levels as adjusted on the UA5 are perfect if they still require tweaking afterwards.  Re-visit setting the levels with the UA5.  Set properly, there's no need to re-adjust the levels within CEP.  Best way I've found to adjust levels within CEP (gain, something you shouldn't need to do):  Effects | Amplitude | Amplify.  FWIW, CEP has an excellent Help File.

1. I would bring the recording levels shown on CEP as close to zero as posible.

2. I would do this by adjusting the "input volume" on the back of the UA-5.

3. While doing this it wouldn't matter at all that the peak light on the UA-5 stayed lit.

That's correct.  The CEP meters will reflect the true, digital peak level.  The "peak" light on the UA-5 is triggered at -2dB or some such, with some minor variance from unit to unit.  Disregard it since you're able to use the CEP levels.

If you need to adjust L/R balance with the UA-5, try running into the front XLRs instead and using the front SENS knobs instead of the rear RCA inputs and Input Volume knob.  It may work, or it may overload the inputs.  If the latter, you'll know quickly and easily by giving the recording a listen - it'll sound distorted.
