Topic: is this a good rig

my buddy just got a new rig and is looking to sell his old rig. He said I could get it for 125 so I was thinking about getting it and trying out taping.

as always, using the term "good" is subjective... i'd say at that price range (just over the $100 mark), that is a reasonable rig. obviously, even if you had a budget of $500, you could do a good bit better. but different people have different goals and different budgets. so if your budget is really limited, then go for it.

if you have even $100 more to spare, i'd say try to purchase only the MD and get some mics from Sound Professionals with the AT831 or AT853 caps.

but that's just my two cents. i found, for myself at least, that it's a good idea to consider your own personality before buying something... i.e. do you normally hit a new 'hobby' hard and heavy, then burn out on it quickly? for concert taping, you might want to consider how many shows you go to (and if you plan on taping most/all shows you attend). obviously, if you don't go to *that* many shows and you don't think you'll go ape over taping shows, then a "starter" rig of Core Sound Binaurals and a MiniDisc are probably as much as you should get.

if i wanted a rig and was offered this same deal, i would jump on it, (IMO) it's a good asking price, and will serve a new taper just fine. good luck w/ your purchace

i'm not 100% familar..does "Core Sound Binaural Microphone Set (Switchable Bass Roll-off Filter)" come with the battery box? if not you'll likely need one between the mics and the MD

i'll have to ask, thanks for bringing that up. I'm assuming that powers the bass roll off?

FWIW, on the CoreSound mics, the roll off filter switch is indeed on the battery box.  The mics would not work without it, because they would not have the right connector to try to put into a recorder without the battery box.

yea, that's a great deal, and you can always upgrade your mics later and just keep the minidisc, I'd say jump on it we all have to start somewhere, plus its an inexpensive way to find out if you enjoy taping

hey man,
i left a few thoughts on traders den for you about this.yeah,find out about that bass roll battery box question.you're definitely gonna want a roll-off option but also power for the mics,and i am not familiar w/ core sounds.get ahold of me before you go to the show and i'll give you some helpful tips,hopefull to avoid some of the things i have done in the past
-ps. you may want to get this rig and give it a few test runs at home before committing to any deal.
