LDC Stereo Mic? Any thoughts or recommended choices?
« on: January 14, 2005, 09:40:03 AM »
I was thinking of adding a large diaphram stereo mic to my bag for up close accoustic stuff.  Anybody use one of these that they like?  I do not want to break the bank, say < $600 used?

I want the more open warm sound of a LDC for a quiet recording environment.. but I will not be doing this so much that I want to spend a ton..

mic>UA-5>JB3

Thanks

LSD2 would fit the bill I think... not positive on the price though

the LSD2 is listed as 799.00 on Oade.com new

I was looking at this mic as well. Still considering it actually but leaning towards the AKG 414's
AKG c426, AKG414 XLS/ST, AKG ck61, ck22, >nBob colettes >PFA > V3, SD MixPre >  TCM-Mod Tascam HDP2, Sony M10
Little Bear tube Pre >Outlaw Audio 2200 Monoblocks > VR-2's

Why not ADK TL's, Ive seen them go for around 600-650 used. They have switchable patterns and the recordings Ive heard with them are pretty damn nice. Good mic for the money.

VERY impressed with the lsd2 to date. KindMS -- definitely be sure to check it out before dropping coin on the 414s -- I think it sounds a lot more like the older akg ld mics than neumanns, brings a LOT of quality sound-wise to the table for a very reasonable price.

Personally, I prefer the smoother high end provided by the lsd2 to the sharper, spittier high end I've heard on adk recordings.  Plus, set-up and configuration doesn't get much easier than with the lsd2

I also run the LSD2 and have been very happy with it.  I now record everything mid-side and mixdown stereo with Wave Lab 5 + Waves L1 Imager plugin.  Simple to use, smaller footprint compared to a traditional pair of LD mics, great sound quality for a very reasonable price.  I'm constantly posting BT announcements for my recordings in the Kickdowns section.

Spring for an SM-69      ;)

The LSD2 is pretty nice, still don't know why I am able to run dual-omnis on it.
Blumlein rocks in a quiet room. Snagged a holidays banjo/fiddle performance with sing-alongs, just killer.

Bob, how do you mean that you are not sure WHY you are allowed to run dual-omni's  ? is that a spelling mistake?
the reason I ask is that i've just bought an LSD2 and i get like electrical fan high pitched whirr (different pitches for different settings) - the only configuration i can use whistle-free is omni & figure of 8 together - I'm pissed off - i can send the thing back, but it'd be interesting to know what the problem is.
is there something i don't know about these mics?!

There is a simple fix for the noise, email Studio Projects and they will tell you how to fix it.

The dual omnis is so that the mic can be used in the studio in more situations, i.e., you can just run one channel set to omni and use it as a final vocal mix mic. At least thats how I've used it and it sounds great that way.

I really like the recordings I've heard made with the LSD2, but I really want the ability to run split omni's. I haven't seen anyone running the Studio Projects C3's and am curious about them. Apperantly they have a slightly larger capsule than the LSD2, but the same options... cardioid, omni, figure 8 and pair of these at sound pure is only $39 more.
