Newbie wants to transfer his 50+ shows
« on: December 20, 2005, 08:55:29 PM »
Hello community! This is my first post here and a very important one. I got a rig about 3 years ago and have been taping most of the shows i attend. I have not bought any software or hardware for transfering my shows from my D8 and JB3 to my IMB computer. I have saved for about a year now and wanna by the best stuff possible to transfer my shows. Since most of the shows are on tapes i didn't want to waste time doing it the low end or crap rca way. I would like to send the signal digitally to my computer. I guess i need a sound card and software such as wavelab. But thats about all i know. In the future i would like to get one of those new hard drive preamp all in one type rigs. I saw one at a Phil & Show the other weekend. I am a young buck, 22, and plan to tape for the rest of my life. I LOVE IT!! I am greatful for any and all suggestions. Thanks. Dave C.

option 1)
playback the dats on the d8 and feed them into your JB3 optical in. then transfer the .wav file from your jb3 to your computer.

option 2)
buy a used fostex d5 home dat deck (~ $150 used).  these decks have an optical out, so you can play back the dats on the d5 and  record them to your jb3 via the optical in.  then transfer the files from the jb3 to the computer.

option 3)
Pick up an inexpensive but bit-transparent soundcard for $50 or so.  Try a search for keywords like "digital", "transfer", "soundcard" and see what recommendations people have made.

As for software, Audacity is free, but may or may not suit your needs depending on how much work you want to do to the recordings.

Not to correct Brian, but you'll need a 7-pin output cable to use the soundcard option with your D8. Someone on the board will prolly let you borrow one if you don't have one already.

True!  Forgot about that - thanks for the corre...err...clarification.  :)  Borrowing may work, they also pop up for sale fairly regularly at good prices, ~$50 it seems lately.

Since you own a JB3 and a d8.............

option 1)
playback the dats on the d8 and feed them into your JB3 optical in. then transfer the .wav file from your jb3 to your computer.

option 2)
buy a used fostex d5 home dat deck (~ $150 used).  these decks have an optical out, so you can play back the dats on the d5 and  record them to your jb3 via the optical in.  then transfer the files from the jb3 to the computer.

I currently am using option 2, and it works great.

as for software to edit the files, there are many that do the job well.  adobe audition, sony soundforge and steinberg wavelab are what I currently use.

welcome to the section !

Couple option one with a Hosa ODL and you have an easy digital transfer solution.

thanks for those options guys! I'm not sure if i fully understand how the signal would be sent... let me look into it a bit more. But i now realize i should provide a bit more details. I have a coaxil 7 pin from oade and a UA5 and i use optical for the JB3. Are there options that would involve some how sending the digital coaxil signal (from the D8) to a soundcard then from the soundcard to an external hard drive then from that hard drive via firewire or USB to my computer. And could that option (soundcard) be also compatable with the JB3 firewire connect then send the signal to a external hard drive then hard drive to computer? Thanks again for your suggestions. Sincerely Dave C.

Ok i've looked into this tranfering situation a bit more. I realize that most of my recordings are ones that other people also recorded and probably pulled a better tape than i did. There for i am not gonna spend much $$ on tranfering.I figured out how to transfer the shows from my JB3 via Firewire to computer, and my friend sold me this magix software for cheap to track the shows. I still need to learn more about that software i wanna have smooth transition from on track to the next. (sorry fo the side track)
Anyways I think I can use the UA5 to transfer the DATs to my computer. (All I need to do is find the instillation disc that has been lost in the sauce) If someone could confirm this (D8>ua5>Computer) it would be much apppreciated!
Thanks for your input! Any other suggestions or explanations would be great.HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Bad idea.  The UA-5 will resample the digital input so that the copy you get on the computer is not the same as the copy on your tape.  It's best to go D8 > 7 pin optical out > JB3 optical in, then use firewire  to copy the file from your JB3 to your computer.  When you do it like that, it's bit-perfect.

Later this eveing I was informed about the UA5 resample thing and i thank you too. I looked into sound cards that are bit-perfect. And well, its not the money i don't wanna spend, rather its the time i got to spend learning about new stuff. It is a pain in the ass for me to learn about new hardware, software or anything computer related. But i'm gonna have to get over that if i wanna transfer these shows.

I really like your suggestion D8>7 pin> JB3 firewire to computer. Although I do have one question. I have a 7 pin coaxil digital out. Would it be so simple as to buy a C02 converter box thing? IF so that is great b/c then i can use that same converter to patch from people's coaxial signals with my JB3. (Sometimes there are no optical signals available when you wanna patch) The D8>7pin>JB3 option would be much better than buying the soundcard Audiophile 2496 by M-audio.

Can anyone help with this issue:
The software I have, magix insists on a 4 sec silence between each song (I think its the software not the CD player in computer) This is not good. I wanna smooth almost unnoticeable transition from one track to the next. I'll mess with this software a bit more but i think its not what i need.
Anyways, i search around here and people seem to like wavelab. WILL the "wavelab essentials" do what i mentioned above?(Smooth transitions) Some people use Wavelab 5 and mentioned it did what i want but it is really out of my price range and so is wavelab 4.0.
Any suggestions would be great. Hopefully I can use the Wavelab Essentials.

Thanks Again. I've learned lots in the past few days! I really look forward to this week b/c i'm gonna tape Bisco both nights at the Tower and Soulive w/Robert Randophl at the Electric Factory and Rail Road Earth on NYE at the TLA. Three different venues one city and lots of live music. Those tapes will provide lots of chances to experiment with different techniques. Love and Light. Dave C

Instead of the co2 get a hosa odl (276) I think. It will convert the signal from digital coax to optical. Check the yard sale. They usually go for around 50 bucks. They are supposed to be more "bit perfect" than the co2. That's how I do it and it works fine so far. As far as software is concerned, if you don't need to convert sampling rates you can use cdwave. It's free, and will easily track your recordings. Personally I use wavelab 5.0 first so that I can apply apogees uv22hr plugin. Some of my old recordings are in 48khz so I also use wavelab to convert the sampling rate to 44.1 for cd use. I use Nero express to burn cd's. I think it's probably free by now also. It will burn without the gaps between tracks. Good luck-Kevin
