matrix question..where do I put my pre?
« on: January 16, 2006, 07:56:41 PM »
So I want to use my V3 for matrix recordings.  If I took a sbd feed into my euro rack and mixed with my mics (with no gain) would I be able to take the main outs of the euro rack, unbalanced RCAs->V3->MT?  Any thoughts would be appreciated...Worried about hot levels going into V3..

When I do them I go

mics onstage>snake (fed to board)

mic feeds out of board>V3>xlr out to 1/4" in on mixer and board feeds out of board into mixer>
Main outs of mixer>Edirol UA-5>Recording Device.

You can do it your way but to use the preamp you really need an a>D and a pre separately.  Good luck!
+T for matrix! :D

I would put the mic into the V3, then "line in" into the eurorack so you can bypass the euroracks mic preamps for your mics. Then line in from your board feed, mix to taste and into the microtrack. This way your only using the eurorack as a line mixer and not your preamp front end. Don't go into the front of house console with your mics, just pull the XLR's lines out of the FOH and go into your V3. You might need some jumper XLR's to reach without being in the way.

This is a tough one.  I have done it both ways when I had my behringer mixer.  The pre's kinda suck, but I can only assume the a/d on the microtrack sucks too.  having another a/d such as an sbm-1, ua5, or a graham patten would make this a no brainer.  I guess I would use the v3 on the mic source only if it will be predominant in the mix.
I.E.  if I was stage micing an amplified band, or micing fob I would use the v3 as a pre and take the a/d from the mt.  If I was micing stage corners for a little ambient room fill I would use the v3 as the a/d.
Keep in mind too, that without delay you should stay within 20' of the PA for best results.  If you are going to be 20-30' back I would heavily favor one source or the other, and 30-45' I would use just a touch of mic, jump it between songs for good crowd reation (while monitoring), and pray you are getting a nice full-range stereo board feed (you may want to bump up the bass eq ~3-5db unless it is a really big room or a really puny PA).  In the case of being far back from the PA use the v3 as A/D.
Good luck with the matrix!!!  I love matrix recordings!

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

If the venue has a good SBD with quality mic pres and phantom power, it may also work well to let the mics from the snake feed run through and be powered by the SBD. I like to do this when I can.

The engineer can keep them out of the house mix and you can take the direct outs from those two channels of the SBD as line feeds.  Then, you'll be able to mix the four or more line feeds on your mixer with the V3 at the end of the chain.

I agree this is another great option, however you will need a really cool soundman for this one... I would love a hit off a midas pre though if I could get it!!!!
