The cache something so the wav files load faster.  The load is almost instant after the first time.  Probably some cost somewhere, eg., if you want to do effects on the wav file though.

I believe it stands for peak... all it is is the graphical representation of the wav file.  If a .pk file doesn't exist, CE will scan the whole file and detect the decibel level for display in the UI.  It is also written to a .pk file so that the next time you open the wav, it doesn't have to scan the whole file in order to draw the wav.

WaveLab has a similar file... I believe it's a .gpk
