iRiver H-120 loading problems
« on: March 03, 2006, 08:21:16 AM »
I know there is a forum for this elsewhere on the web but I thought I might ask here.

The levels while recording....are they displayed on the remote unit?

Is there is difference between the IHP and HP-120?

Anyone tried running anything better than...let say, AT853RX and an outboard pre into one of these things?  I just want to know if this thing is actually a contender.

Any possibility of the rockbox developers getting the SPDIF glitch free?

I really think this little box is heaps better than an iPod....but then I have always been a fan of the Rio500, so I must be into functionality and not flash.

IHP was changed to H series due to legal issues (I think it was with Hewlett Packard).  I've run dpa4061>mma6000>H140 one time and it sounds ok so far.  The big test will come at the end of this month when I open tape a local act, that's when I'll know if the iriver's ad is decent because I've taped this local act many times before with my at853's.  I haven't tested the levels with the remote, yet, damn...I should have by now.  Hope that helps a bit, I'm sure someone else will chime in to answer the rest.

Sure, there's a long thread on the forum about this and other enhancements to the remote (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=2513.0)
I'm using it and it's way terrific: broad, visible indicators, large fonts, backlight when clipping. A veru useful feature is you set the hold switch ON in the main unit and the remote remains operative (what I often do is to attach the remote somewhere in my shirt, hide the the main unit inside a pocket, and chek the remote only for levels and clipping).
This contribution to rockbox is a major one, and if don't want to compile yourself you can still download the precompiled firmware from the thread above.

Hey andy,

I think this thing is better than the njb3 without when running without an external a/d.  For two reasons, size and better battery life, and remote.  I guess thats three.  The remote shows levels and allows you to stop and start recordings.

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=33863

There's  a recording i made: schoeps mk4 > kcy > schoeps vms 02 > iriver.  What you would be running I'm guessing.

I'll post pictures of the remote and everything in action tonight.

Same a/d as the jb3 I think, but no plans of making digital in probably.

Its a contender IMO

Man, I cannot get Rockbox to load on this IHP-120.  I followed the Rockbox instructions specific for the H-100 series.  When I load the patched firmware and update the firmware with it....I never get a bootloader screen upon start like it says in the instruction.  So, I said what the fuck...I loaded the newest version of Rockbox for the H-120 but it never boots up in Rockbox mode.  What the fuck am I doing wrong here?  I am just happy I haven't screwed the thing up yet.

Don't worry about screwing it up, if rockbox fails, you can still reboot to the stock firmware (by holding rec when you hit play to boot up) and clean up the rockbox files.

I couldn't figure out how to install rockbox until I saw this walk thru:  http://www.misticriver.net/showpost.php?p=283091&postcount=24

Read the instructions carefully and it should work.  If there's any issues pm me or ask here, I can help you once I get home from work if no else responds to your q's.

Thanks gloco, sanjay and qpwoei ,+T to you all

Okay, whew, I got it in with V1.66U firmware I patched and then threw in recent 3-13-2006 rockbox build for the H120.  It is a bit buggy in the remote...no logic to the controls there.  Also, I wanna get mmm's recording enhancement patch but do not know how this is done.  I tried recording via the line in with a pair of core sounds binaurals and batt box (thanx sullen) and it seems to work okay (have to crank the gain to like +10-15dB).  been a while since I ran around with a pair of these but I figure if I am gonna to Europe and be a dumbass, I sure don't want my DPA or Schoeps gear getting pinched.  Probably gonna just clip these willy nilly at the Melkweg for The Bays somewhere I can watch it easily, b/c I sure am not going to wear them....besides, my wife is gonna be with me and she hates when i am obsessed with recording a show.  THis is perfect, I have no high expectations.  Just something fun to play with later to remember the performance.  THe rockbox H120 was gonna come anyway since I have to spend hours on a plane with no good book to read.

Any last minute suggestions for the rockbox H120 knave?  I will probably get one or two more chances to check my ts.com account before Saturday evening.

Cool!  Glad to hear you got it working.  The only recommendation I can make is to check the recording options and just fiddle with the unit to get used to it.

I suggest you download and install the compiled version that includes the Automatic Gain Control patch.  This is a patch that Mmmm...has not included in his builds because he is trying to compile in a way that his additions will work with all versions and can be permanently committed to the Rockbox firmware.  Here is a location for the compiled version:
http://homepage.sunrise.ch/mysunrise/remartinelli/html/rockbox.html

Download that, unzip it, and then copy/paste the .rockbox folder right into the main part of the drive to overwrite the version you have now.  You will have to go into the .rockbox folder and copy the rockbox.iriver file and paste it to the main directory replacing the old one as well.  That compiler puts that file in the .rockbox folder so it doesn't get lost, you just have to move it to replace the old one to get it to work right.  At this time the AGC will not automatically do regain i.e. if it reduces your gain to prevent clipping, it will not readjust gain automatically back up in quieter sections.  That patch also has a histogram to give you an idea of what your levels look like in decibels.  Also adds meters for remaining disk space and time left recording.  Picture of the recording screen can be viewed at the above link.  Very nice additions to the Rockbox firmware.  I am probably going to stick with  4061s > iRiver with Rockbox for my next few shows and see how it turns out.  The only thing I am afraid of is the iRiver doesn't supply quite enough power for the 4061s.  I know they don't need a whole lot, but want them to have enough juice to get the job done.  Preliminary tests have been positive.
