Mic Advise... Card or Omnis
« on: April 29, 2006, 07:12:06 PM »
Hi,
I'm going to an acoustic show in two weeks....It will be a stealth gig..I have front row seats....Which caps should I use...I will be using AT 853's.....I have the stock cardoid caps and I'm thinking about picking up some omni caps...I've been using the omni caps on my C-4's recently and lovin' it.... The music will be fairly loud....I have a set of AT 943's but they are not XLR capable (single mini plug) and they may brickwall......My stealth set up will be hat mounted AT853's(w/phantom kit from SP)>SD MixPre>R-1....

Any advise would be greatly appreciated....Thank You.

Peace,
jk

If you mean size wise, probably 250 to 350 or so but I'm not sure if I understood your question. And I have no idea what the venue is like. It's on a private ranch. I'm not sure it it will be outdoors or in a barn....I do know I have seats 9 and 10 up front. I figure if I'm that close the speakers will be off to the sides of the stage so the omnis may work better. Thanks.

Peace,
jk

Hi,
Thanks for the help.....It's going to be an older crowd....40+.......One acoustic guitar and one mandolin...The crowd is usually very quiet and there will be no booze available....I'm going to pick up some omni caps for the 853's this week...I just ordered a 3 foot set of studio Mogami's so if it's possible I may try my SP C-4's pinned into my vest just for fun....Thanks again..

If the crowd is going to be quiet, I would use the omnis especially since you are going to be up close.  Since your stealthing the omnis are more forgiving to any head movement where as cards if you have to move your head you may hear the movement in your recording...............
