Is $200.00 a Good price for used Tascam 112 MKII ?
« on: March 30, 2006, 01:50:42 PM »
I need to pick up a cassette deck for cassette masters -> PC transfers.

I have seen mention of this deck and the Naks and etc in other threads as being a good choice for transfers. I have found a few used in great shape at this price point.

Any other model suggestions would be cool. I would like to keep cost down as this will be for transfer of masters to digital domain.

Also this unit has a Balanced output kit the Tascam LA-112 thats optional. Any real use for it / would it be a good pick up as well. the accessory unit is only like $100.00

$200 is too expensive IMO.

You can get a 122mkII for that price if you look around long enough.

122mkII is an excellent deck, too.  Balanced I/O, all kinds of adjustable parameters.  Super nice, I think.  Good luck!

how would a Harmon Kardin TD 420 compare to it?

Not sure.  Never heard the HK decks.  In fact I don't know if I've ever even seen one.  The Tascam was a staple in the studios back in the day (still is too, I think).

Can't find much info on the HK, but from the pictures and features I did find it looks like more of a consumer deck.  Unbalanced I/O, no azimuth/bias adjustments, tape speed, etc...

Can't really compare with the other models mentioned but you can also probably get a good Marantz deck for less than that.  I did several years ago when I wanted to digitize my collection.  Everything came out in good shape.

Do the Tascam 112/122 allow azimuth adjustment with a knob on the front like the Nak CR-7 or does it have to be adjusted using a screwdriver?

I'm looking at the front of mine now and it looks like a screwdriver adjustment.  Personally I think I'd rather have that than a knob - less chance of an accidental mis-adjustment...?
