Lawn taping: ATs or DPAs?
« on: July 21, 2006, 01:01:36 AM »
I'm hitting a show sometime soon and I will probably have to tape from the lawn. I've been on there before and know how it will sound for the most part. It is loud enough but has a lack of bass compared to the pavilion seats.

My only two mics are my AT 831s and DPA 4061s. Which do you guys should be run. Since there really isn't all that much bass, I was considering the ATs. They would also help with the fact that the lawn seats aren't going to be nearly as loud as the pavilion. Would there be any reason to run the DPAs though?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Just got the word that taping is OPEN. I'd be most likely flying the mics 9-10 feet up on the lawn.

Can you borrow a second recorder (edit - and bb) and run both?

BTW DPAs are (generally) bassier than CMC2s. (yes, IMHO)

CMC2s are also very sensitive to wind and produce a rumbling noise. I've used screens + mini dead rats outside with reasonable results - cuts most of the rumble, but also some top-end.

I've heard some great, not good great, lawn tapes with the 4060 series mics.  All depends on the delay arrangement, but it is possible on a stand to pull a nice sounding tape with them from the lawn.  Wouldn't reccommend a wide spread (no more than 24" due to phasing.  If you do post work don't run roll off at the venue, if you don't do post, I'd run a little high-pass.

peace, chris
