What's the catch?  :P

This seems like it could beat the R-09, but I'm sure those with more technical knowledge among us can comment on this.

edit: Hmm what I would like to know is 1) battery time (li-ion or AA?) and 2) physical size.

Found the H4 to REALLY suck badly with noise and severely rolled off mid-to-high frequencies when bench tested (posted the graphs www.sonicstudios.com/zoomh4rv.htm), but obviously what's so special about the H4 may not apply to an entirely new design.

H2 model seems to be taking its time to be available, so maybe Samson engineers have learned something and are being more careful this time around?

You'll want to stay away from omnidirectional mics - mics with a 360 degree pickup pattern - as they can be brutally unforgiving in bad-quality rooms.

Well I guess I just bought the worst mics possible then  ;D

yep, that's me!  i'm not taping nearly as much as i used to, but i enjoy it when i do get out and can -- i write for about.com (part of the new york times company) as well as work as a freelance engineer/producer.

i really dig the h4 -- it's portable, works fine for what it's meant to do at the price point, and the H2 will be good, i'm sure.  the one i saw up close was built much better than the H4, a little stronger build.  i'll be getting one soon to test out.

not at all!  remember, i have to write to the guys just starting out -- if you know how to use omnis well, you know that they're really nice mics...  but for the taper just starting out, they might not be happy with it, especially if they're wanting to just tape their band in shitty rooms with the mics back by the board.

I have a buddy whow orks for Samson. He gave me some lit. on the H2. Didnt mention a release date, but I will ask him when we can expect it to be released.

I use an H4 fairly regularly, and for me it works great. if you are on a budget, I wouldnt hesitate to buy this recorder. only downside is no digi-in. I can deal w/ the 2-XLR/1/4" inputs though.
