Iriver Recording with or without Rockbox
« on: May 05, 2006, 11:32:05 AM »
Ive been reading other threads for a while now and am looking for a few things.. I just picked up an Iriver H120. And ran the optical in from my edirol UA-5 last night for 2 minutes and it worked fine.. Heres my question:

1) will this stop recording automatically? I think I read it stops after XXXmb (about 80 minutes?)

2) I havent loaded rockbox yet.. I am gonna use the Iriver tonight without it. Do I need this? Im using optical in for now, and will try the mic in with my sonics next week. Once I load Rockbox will it override the current program in the unit? Will I still have an optical input to use?

Sorry for the waste of bandwith, but Im not very computer literatre.. Good at taping, not good at computers, dopwloading, ETC.

1.  With the iriver firmware, yes, it stops at 700MB (or 800MB)...I could have sworn it was 795MB, but my memory is fuzzy on the exact size.
2.  I've read that the optical in was not bit perfect and it dropped samples, not sure if that was corrected with the rockbox optical in patch.  When you load rockbox, it does not erase the iriver firmware, it just sits alongside with it.  Even with rockbox installed, you can still boot up to the iriver firmware by holding down the record button and hit play.  Just hit play to load the rockbox firmware.  There is a patch out there for optical in with rockbox, not sure how well it works, I haven't tried it.  I honestly have no clue if the iriver firmware even has levels so you can set levels with it.

I highly recommend rockbox with your iriver, it works great with mine and I have no bugs to report.

Yup, iriver fw optical recording was always buggy.  The only way to get it bit perfect was to install either 1.63 or 1.65 fw (sorry, can't remember exactly which right now...i'm leaning towards the former) AND during recording, hold the joystick in a direction for the entire length of the recording.

The rockbox optical patch is bit perfect however it is still just a patch for a reason...its not finished yet.  Some users have had issues with their recording (and iriver) hanging when the signal's lost or if they've got a dodgy toslink cable for example.  I've recorded two gigs (that i didn't mind screwing up if things went awry) with it flawlessly.
