LSD2 vs. ADK TL's
« on: June 13, 2006, 05:13:13 PM »
What are your thoughts on these set-ups.  I'm thinking I'd like to add some LD's to the mix.  I'm currently running SPc4's into Digi-modUA5.

I know both mic's have a large fanbase of their current owners and am just looking for a little more insight.  Sure, I am aware of the 1 vs. 2 mic advantage and the weak pin construction of the LSD2.

What are some other pro's and con's, and thoughts on these two head to head.  It seems that both companies have a good reputation amoungst the ts crowd as well.  I know I need to listen to some samples of each as well to hear what sounds best to my ears--any links would be appreciated.  I suck at the archive search function.

peace and thanks in advance.

i'm a vote for the LSD for a few reasons.  for my personal tastes, I believe that coincident stereo techniques are the best way to run LD mics.  That makes the donky dick a winner right there.

ease of setup vs fussing with two mics and T bars and all that crap.
less crap to lug around (though probably not much difference in weight)

the weak pins are not a real big problem.  just be careful w/them and always make sure the screw is tight (that holds in in place, its an odd setup on mine.  the screw needs to be at a certain point of "looseness" for it to be tight).

besides, be loyal to your team!

Gotta agree with Nick on the ease of use, and the LSD2 might even be lighter than a pair of TLs and Shure vert bar. At least I remember them being the heaviest mics I've ever used. And the TLs are a pain to set up and lug around a festival. I've only taped with the LSD2 a couple of times but I'd never go back to TLs.

Thanks guys, now sell me your mic! >:D

I was leaning towards staying loyal to TeamSP.  This about seals the deal.  Now I just need the scratch--should have it by the end of the month.

I like my TL's and I like the fact that I get 4 patterns to fool around w/. Heavy they are but if ya go LD ya kinda have to expect it. I have run almost all patters so far minus MS but I plan on trying it out soon at HSMF. So far I have really liked the results of the shows I taped w/ my TL's even though they were real chatty venues.

I used own the TL's and they are great. I love there sound. One of best bang for your buck around.

I love the LSD-2's sound. Never used it but seems like a quick and lite LD. Only downside is no hyper card. Which is not really a huge downside if you don't use it or need it. Another great microphone for the price.

I used to own the TLS and have run the LSD2 a few times.

1 thing to keep in mind is that pretty much all LDs have a significant high-frequency boost, but in my experience the LSD2 boost is much more compared to the TLs. I also didnt particularly care for the bass response of the LSD2...it seemed rather muted compared to the TLs. I think this is because of the fixed x/y pattern of the LSD2 as it naturally rolls off some bass.
granted, the music I tend to record is much more bass intensive compared to the standard rock/jam fare most here record, so this may not be a issue to you.

that said, I liked the LSD2 when used as a ambient mic mixed in with sbd or multitracks...just not as a standalone source (ie, just mics>pre/ad>recorder)

I actually had both of these mics at the same time.  I ran a comp once (both cards x/y 90) and it seemed to me that the LSD2 card pattern was tighter than the TL's.  So I wouldn't shy away from the LSD2 just because it doesn't have the hypers.

Split omni can sound nice, but just about any situation you can do splits, you can probably do blumlein.  It can sound just as good (or better) and is so easy to do with the LSD2.

If you plan on doing any fob-type recording, I would definitely go with the LSD2.  It's remarkably low profile with the stacked caps.

I had both, I sold the TL's and kept the LSD2.  They both sound great and compare favorably with the multi-thousand-dollar alternatives.  I can point you to several shows where people favored my LSD2 recording to Schoeps, Neumanns, etc.

Both!!!!!

OK, actually I guess it does depend on the situation.  If you tape mostly FOB or in small areas the LSD2 looks like it kicks ass.  Maybe you get more options with the TL's, but those are also options you may not need/want.  However if you have lots of room where you tape or just like to have all the caps and don't mind the extra weight, I think the TL's are the way to go.  I don't think you'll find anyone that has much bad to say about the way that either mic sounds.

Great Insight.  +t's if I could.

I'm thinking I'll keep my c4's as well so the split omni's option is still there.  As for hypers,  they'd be nice, but in all honesty I live in Montana and am usually taping small club gigs with occasional road trips to bigger venues.  I still haven't made up my mind yet but I'm leaning to LSD2 with my fingers crossed that SP will deliver on the hyper for the C4.

CraigT--send me in the direction of someof your shows.

Thanks! JD
