Topic: Help with geting some new mics

At this time I am runing sp c4 and have about $1500 to spend on a new set on mics. I was look at mbho 603a/KA 200 N. The other mics that I were looking at were akg 480 and nuemann SKM 184s .I did a search on here and came up with a lot of good things about all the mics that I was look at. I also got some show taped with them to see what they sound like to my ears. Are there any other mics that are in the same ball park that go for about the same and I will  also be useing them with a  SD 722. Thanks for all the help and making this place a grate place for info on tapeing.

actually, if you were thinking of a 140 kit... maybe, but only b/c its got some versaltility that the akgs dont (actives and fig 8 caps).... but i think straight into the 722, the 480s will sound better... dont they anyways... 

**edit to add** i would probably get the mbhos if the actives/fig 8 was peaking your interest... save some cash

I've been considering making this change myself. How noticable was the difference? I think I need to hear some more shows taped with the Peluso mics.

Haven't uploaded any to the archive but J.T. uploaded one of my Outformation recordings to archive.  Really sweet matrix.  Just do a search there for my real name, Jon Buffington, and you can stream it.

jeromejello actives were one of the thing about the mbho that I liked and also they sound grate to me. With the fig 8 caps I don't know that much about them were would one use a set of them.

stirinthesauce I did get the phil and petty set and they were some nice sounding show. What tipe of show do you most tape with your mics. Most of the time I tape in the beacon theater, and other small clubs, ball rooms in nyc and nj. So did you use them indoors yet and if so how do you think they stand up. Did you post any of the indoor show if you taped any.

go to the archive and listen to a bunch of different mic sources. take the suggestions and use them as candidates for your listening, but by no means take any opinion here as gospel, including mine. ears are very different....there are a lot more options than the "common" ones used here such as the AT 4050s, ADKS, Josephsons...earthworks..the list goes on and on. I will tell you this...Last week I had a mic shootout with several HIGH END mics(I mean 5-6,000 dollars a PIECE, not for the pair..) and had the AT4050 in on the rotation. I was amazed at how many people that were in the listening tests and heard the tests afterwards prefered the 4050s over the "boutique" offerings... I also know of an AKG c33E stereo Mic (you can search that one on Archive too) for sale. less than what you have too, cost-wise. itll be a long path to determine what you like, but dont buy based on suggestins alone!

I've been using a pair of AT 4050's recording the Jazz Band at my school.  I've been running them split about 20' apart.  I've been pretty happy with the results... I just wish I could run them a bit closer to the stage.  Other than for recording purposes, they were a waste of tax payer dollars though

Glad you liked those B'roo shows    90-95% of the taping I do is indoors.  It's just summertime and I'm trying to take advantage of outdoor taping ops    Love the mics indoors/outdoors, in all taping situations.
