Bass problems... I think.
« on: July 07, 2006, 12:11:57 AM »
Been running the SP-CMC2As into a batt box into a JB3 for a year.

Dropped the bomb and picked up my first upgrade, a w+ mod ua-5 from alienbobz. Great box.

Taped DMB at Alpine Valley this weekend from about 6 rows from the right stack(more horns). Used my calibrated SVU-2 and the ua-5 to make sure I wasn't peaking.

Still running the SP-CMC2As to a batt box with bass rolloff at 95 Hz. Then through XLRs to the ua-5, then out to the JB3 optically.

Weird thing is, the tape sounds like the bass was clipping all over the place. Maybe it's just my ears and I'm not used to the sound of the mics with this type of box running before the JB3.

Here's a FLAC of "Ants Marching" from N1. You can really hear it in the long note held at the end. Didn't want to compress and lose any effect of what I am experiencing.

Am I just being over paranoid or does it sound kind of funky to anyone else? Parts where it is really bass and guitar driven sound... well, it just has this weird kind of... well, when you stick your tongue out and blow air. :lol

Any explanation?

Thanks in advance. And yes, I plan on getting better mics, those are probably the next big plunge.  ;D

(sorry mods if i stuck this in the wrong forum! i'm not sure where the problem is, so i didn't want to stick it to one place.)

Granted I am at work on crapy PC speakers, but I dont hear any bass issues or clipping.

I use these same speakers to convert my DMB shows and I have noticed when I clip on them.

the bass sounds totally fine to me, have you tried listening to it on some good headphones or better speakers?

I used some over the ear headphones, not earbuds or anything... they aren't anything special.

Maybe there is nothing wrong and I'm just not used to the bass being so up front and defined so well due to the ua-5. Could be that due to the ua-5 the mics are getting the workout they don't usually get. :)

Maybe it is just a different sound I will need to get used to until I pick up some better mics.

Thanks for the responses so far. +T

I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

actually, to my ears, that sounds extremely clear and up-front - very nice! If anything, the highs are a bit too harsh for my taste, but that's quite easily changed at the playback source.

Thanks.

I guess it's just me then.

I felt like the bass was almost "distorting" the sound towards the end, but I guess it's just my ears playing tricks on me.

Pretty sure I hear what you're talking about

A little bit of fuzz there at the end.  Nothing overwhelming or really noticeable, but some fuzz nontheless
