iriver H10-rockbox recording capability
« on: September 14, 2006, 11:25:16 PM »
Looked everywhere in the "recording gear" section here for info on this before posting, but couldn't find it.

I simply want to know if there is any timeframe on when the great folks working on rockbox will be at the point where rockbox for the H10 reached the functionality of the rockbox for the H1xx units.

Namely, it doesn't appear to me that you can record at all with the H10, though you *should* be able to (in my amateur estimation).  I don't know much about it, and I have to admit that I'm posting because I'm excited about the possibility of replacing (or supplementing) my HiMD MZ-NH900 with this unit, which, at the moment is available in it's 20gb iteration at amazon (refurb) for $169.  http://www.amazon.com/iRiver-MP3-Player-Recorder-Blue/dp/B0009H9PZU/sr=1-5/qid=1158289431/ref=sr_1_5/104-4986372-3967915?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I've been beating my head against the wall for a long time trying to find the "perfect" HD recorder for taping, and would love this tiny package.

Any help appreaciated, and forgive my ignorance!

From what I'm reading in a little quick research is that you have to purchase a cradle to have a line-in jack.  But, the cradle only works on H10s with 5 or 6 GB hard disks.  You're likely going to want more storage than that, I'd assume.  Because of the cradle being the only way to record, rockbox might not mess with it.

I'd suggest just going with an H120/iHP-120 (same thing).  They can be had for quite cheap, and I can't imagine them being significantly different in size from another 20 gig player by the same company.  eBay.  +T

Thank you!  I had looked around for these after reading the extensive and excellent FAQ on the H1xx + rockbox setup on this forum but was unable to find anyone selling the 1xx / 3xx irivers in good shape. (backup...I just searched e-bay, and found some 320's in the $150 price range...)

I'll keep searching!

I am very pleased with the results I'm getting from my rockboxed H120. I paid $180 + shipping through e-bay. If you go that route load the rockbox with the recording enhancement pack. The folks @ rockbox have done a great job.
SP-CMC-2 (AT831s) --> SP-SPSB-1 (with levels & bass roll-off) --> iRiver H320 Rockboxed
SP-CMC-2 --> SP-SPSB-1 --> MZ-M100

If you have a soldering iron, you can build your own line input cable for much less than buying a cradle:

http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=26615

The only odd part is the edge connector, about $5 from Mouser:

http://www.mouser.com/search/productdetail.aspx?R=DA1P018M91E

where mine is currently backordered :..(.

Line in recording is currently kind of limited, but Rockbox is in development for the H10

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IriverH10Port#Current_Status

and there's been a flurry of activity lately. I hope it gets finished soon, since the  H10 is a great little player with a crappy interface!

Or you can get a refurb 320 direct from iriver:

I think I'll end up going to 320 route.  Thanks a ton for the tip on buying direct from iriver refurb.  That price is less than some used 320s go for on ebay!  I'm going to do a lot more reading before I buy anything, but that 320 sounds like a spectacular buy for someone like me who's always been happy with their HiMD recordings and is looking to move the minidisc recorder to "backup" status.  I've really loved taping with my NH900, but I worry too much about details... having to watch closely to swap discs, wait with bated breath while the files write after hitting stop, trying not to bump the recorder, and worrying all the while about the battery petering out after an hour and a half, etc. It'll be a real relief to put some of the worries behind me. though I'm sure that the 320 has a host of things for me to worry over too.  I AM excited that there is actively developed open-source firmware for this unit!  That is something I'd really be interested in using, though I haven't got much to offer in the way of improving it.

I'd also like to get an external a>d unit.  I know that the H1xx's have optical in, and I believe that the 3xx's don't have optical in, but can you still send digital to the 3xx's?  Like I said before, I have a lot to learn, so it's back to the forum!

Thanks again!

Melon.
