R4: mod vs. unmod comparison.
« on: September 23, 2006, 11:50:17 PM »
OK, I've done a comparison of my mod vs unmod R4.

Ch1/2 were modded with various AD opamps (3 different types in signal chain), and poly caps on the input.  I was aiming for a "warm" sound here with the AD opamps.  They are not super fast, but are supposedly better for audio (lower distortion).  Ch3/4 were stock with NJM opamps, and original electrolytics on the input (with phantom power off).

Here are two samples *split* from the same mics (CK91 mics, self-made battery box, close to stage).  But I can't tell much difference.  Maybe I need some different opamps (or golden ears :).  Note a *slight* difference in levels (due to pots not being exact).

now that you've used the mods for a while, was it worth it, and why (if so)?

i find that the second sample is a touch warmer than the first, and therefore the first is a touch brighter than the 2nd.  But in all honesty, nothing too noticeable.

FWIW, I listened to the samples through some my laptop speakers, some Sony reference headphones, and some m-audio studio monitors (in that order).
