Got new speakers! Rega R1's
« on: October 10, 2006, 10:02:12 PM »
Here's some pics!

They sound great so far.  I picked them up two weeks ago.  The midrange is sweet, very open and articulate.  I was listening to some Keb Mo (album: just like you, song: Perpetual blues machine) and it sounds like he's playing in the living room, its wild.

I'm currently using a Yamaha receiver to power them, the model# is: RX-V493.  I'm using a Sony cd/sacd/dvd player as my source at the moment mostly because its a 5 disc carousel and it would be a pain to switch each cd out with my Music Hall source.  I'm actually surprised by how good the Sony source is doing.  I'll be back with more impressions tomorrow, g'nite!

Are your speaker cables connected correctly? I see an AMP notation on the sleeving.
Enjoy them. I remember my first nice pr of speakers.

Hmm, didn't notice that before!  I'll take a look at see what the other side that's plugged into the speakers has written on it.

Bob, they sound great!  Surprisingly they do well with rock music...I was jamming out to some Opeth a few days ago and they held up well.  The midrange stands out, so they work well with softer music...I was listening to some Dave Brubeck and I tell ya...the entire room was enveloped in music.  It's orgasmic.  The bass response is very solid for such a small speaker.  When I auditioned them the bass was a bit weak, so I was a little concerned after I placed the order, but apparently the room's acoustics and the amp seem to make them come alive.  I just wish the stands were higher....damn stands are so expensive these days!  Freaking audiophiles   :D

can you get em out in front of the TV a little bit? That would help with imaging and soundstage

Congrats!

yeah, I can definitely move em around a bit.  I read that if they are closer to the wall=more bass, that's why I moved them back.

I imagine if I had higher stands the imaging and soundstage would open up a bit more.  The salesman that helped me out recommend I place a wooden block between the stand and the speaker to help with resonances that may occur.

Thanks for the tip Tim!

I didn't think about proximity to the wall helping with bass - good point!

I'm sure you'll find that happy medium :)

enjoy

indeed...
closer to the wall will deepen the bass...but the trade off is the sense of depth that you would have if they were pulled out a bit.

Yep, definitely.  I moved the speakers to stick out in front of the tv and the soundstage opened up quite a bit.  The only issue I have is that the Yamaha receiver is not a great match with the speakers (ie.  too darn bright).  I think a tube amp is required   :D

The R1's are designed to be played close to the rear wall, not more than 12" or so.  28" stands put the tweeters at ear level.  Beyond that, they are not very picky about placement.  I love the R1's.  They are music makers.  I'm listening to them with a turntable and tube amp at the moment.
