recording on stage - which mic?
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:11:43 PM »
I'm trying to find a good setup that I can use on stage during performances, and in rehearsal. I've got a Microtrack and would like to be able to use a binaural / stealth type mic. We're usually playing on small size stages, and I'd like to keep the "junk pile" around me small. Ultimately I'd like to get this rigged into my guitar pedalboard, so adding full sized mics and their accessories is more than I want. This is a 5 piece band with a full drum set, electric guitars, vocals. So this mic will be placed a few feet from the drums and amplifiers.

I have been using Koss binaural stereo mics. I don't remember the set being expensive, so it may be a bit better than the T mic that comes with the MT. But I'm always getting distortion of some kind. I tried a -20dB attenuator, but then the volume is way too low. I don't see the peak lights coming on the MT, but then I don't stare at it constantly.

I'm looking at the Core Sound CSB. It's not cheap, and it's hard to tell if it will be a lot better. The Koss isn't for sale any more, so I can't compare specs. The spec on the CSB shows maximum SPL > 135dB, so I'm wondering if this will reduce the overload problem.

I understand how to use the MT, so I believe the settings are OK.

Tnanks in advance for any information.

Has anyone here taken the plunge and is running any Church Audio equipment? I offered to trial a set a few months back but never heard any more.

BTW (I know its a typo) that link is wrong.

Ive had great success with running josephson c42s on stage
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

You may want to check out the Sonic Studios line for a small unobtrusive setup.

I know this is an old topic, but I happened accross it and felt it neccessary to comment on the Church-Audio mics as I've been using various sets of their preamps and mics for over 3 years, and roughly 100 recordings.

This is an honest, unbiased, unsolicted recomendation- I doubt you will find any mics and pre for the price range that Church Audio hits that even come close to the dependability and sound quality of the church audio gear.

I don't have time to go into details about all of my positive experiences with Chris and his gear, but I've been very happy with his gear.  The only thing that has put them on the shelf some lately is that I've been using an Earthworks SRO > Mini-me rig for open taping situations, but I just recently recorded again with his gear with very positive results.

Chris, as he admits, is not the most eloquent typist, but I've actually spoken with him on the phone a few times, and he is in fact very intelligent, and definitely knows his stuff, and has many years of live sound experience.

For the money, I think you can't go wrong, and I actually wouldn't consider any rig under $300 to replace his that I spent less than $100 on.

Sincerely,
Manley

While my suggestion won't fit this bill, I have had wonderful results using the Earthworks QTC-1/QTC-30 mics on-stage.
