If you push the reset button on the bottom, does it erase the HD??? Thanks!

No - it will just reboot the recorder...

If you hold down the Stop button while poking the reset button and then hit "play" as soon as the Creative screen appears...it will put you into "Rescue Mode"

Which has a few options...

Rescue mode has 4 options...

Clean Up (Good for finding lost files in the event of some malfunction)

Format (this will erase any recordings...better than deleteing IMO)

Reload OS (Your recorder has to be pretty screwed up to need this one)

Reboot (just restarts)

Questions about formatting:

1) how often should I do this?

2) Does this reset my settings to default?

Thanks,

Terry

I like to fill my recorder up - and then Format...instead of Deleting all the files...

Deleting seems to be hard drive intensive - lots of whiring and clicking...

Plus it seems like some folks have had issues after deleting a bunch of files...

So - how often - depends on how fast you can fill a 20 gig hard drive...

Not sure about the settings...

I waited until my hard drive said I had about 2 hours of record time left. I had moved some files previously and dumped some off. I never noticed any decrease in effectiveness and I figured although I was probably fragmenting the drive, it was all big chunks of additions and deletions. About 6 months ago though I just decided to re-format the hard drive. It was easy and I had no problems at all since. It is nice not to have to worry about how much room I have left. Also I never once played any of the songs on the drive that were pre-installed, so it was good to get them off too. Bottom line was that with a pretty full harddrive, and with a very empty hard drive, the unit has performed the same for me.

I don't keep anything on my JB3.  Once I tape a show, it goes on the PC.  Once saved to FLAC discs, I delete from my JB3.  I don't use it for MP3s.  And I use every once in a while for data transport from work, but all that gets deleted once copied to the home PC.

Since my JB3 is about empty anyways, I'm not sure how reformat might be different from deleting...

Thanks for the thoughts,

Terry

I'm probably a minority here, but I use my JB3 as a MP3 player first and a recorder second.  I tape a show every month or two.  The night before a show I format the drive and charge the batteries.  i've never had a problem with the unit yet.  Oh yeah, I have a car adapter I use and not the betteries except when taping.

I never let mine get more than a few shows on it but I always reformat instead of delete.    it's pretty much like defragmenting to me.  the only pops etc I've gotten with the jb3 were when I just deleted a bunch of files and didn't do a reformat.
