i just scored an 8GB CF card and plan on using the 722 as a 702 at times :) hoping i can get better battery timing and like the idea of the RAID-1 that the Internal HDD and the CF card give me

For best Battrey Results I think you will have to select CF only and literally turn the HD off...  maybe ask Fozzy if it helps.  Also, from what I can tell, the type of Mics you are using can effect the battery life if you are phantom powering... again, since I am just getting back into the little box you may want to defer to a long time user just to be sure..

CF Cards are getting bigger and cheaper very fast... the 16 gig cards already exist - just pricey right now...

Good luck with it Bean!

hoping i can get better battery timing

There are quite large batteries available - they should give you more than 6 hours continous operation on HD + CF + Phantom .

G.

I have a plethora of batteries, i have a genuine sony 6600mah(which i just bought in july and has already started to die, full voltage is 7.8v :( used to be 8.2v at max), 2 cheapie 6000mah ones, a 4600mah one(came with the 722) and a 3000mah sony

also 9 x 3000mah 7.2v NIMH batts and i am getting one of these by way of mitch's help and just using the dummy cell for festies so i can easily do 3 full days

even with the 5 external ones i have, i can get about 20+ hrs, maybe 24 or so

i really got the 8GB CF card for my usual redundant/obsessive side when it comes to gear. i got burned at moedown on nite 1 for moe when running jason adlers mg 210's>722 and something happened, lost the first part of the set and the 722 started a new file at the error, so i lost the beginning of the set>middle of set, had to have been a HDD error, im thinking if i had the CF card i wouldve walked away with a copy. now i have the 722 set to stop the recording at a HDD error, gonna have to switch that over since i have the CF card

more expenses are coming tho, need to get a portadrive for festies and rechargeable AA's for the portadrive

or would i be better off just transferring from CF Card>722 HDD ??? wonder if the CF card and the HDD have the exact same filenames ??? or would they be slightly different? if they were different i could just transfer CF Card>722 HDD and verify everything after the festie. running 24/44.1 i could prolly record to the HDD AND the CF Card and transfer from CF Card>722 HDD and still have enough space, that should get me about 44 hrs on the 722 HDD

maybe i'll put an 80GB HDD in that sucker ???

*******done rambling*******

If you run multiple CF Cards... you can record to one, have the other in an external Readrr Downloading to a Porta Drive... if you are running 4gig cards at 24/96.

In an extreme you can take an 8gig Card and just run 24/48 and have a full day on one card probably with room to spare.

Bigger HD does not always solve the issue... a 40 Gig HD will more than cover a weekend Festival unless you are going nutz a 24/192...

Your call... Battery Power would be my pirmary concern and you seem to have that covered...

well, since i already have a ton of $$ invested in my rig, i will prolly say fuck it and get a portadrive OR get the hardware upgrade and get this firewire external harddrive and just transfer the card>722 external HDD 8) cheaper option than the portadrive, BUT the portadrive has nice verification while transferring and i would prolly feel safer using the portadrive, but the external firewire is DEF an option

what would you do? and this is ONLY for festies, i will prolly NEVER see a show big enough to fill an 8GB CF Card, so what i end up doing is gonna be a ways away, id just like to hear some other opinions from you folks.

1. transfer CF Card>722 Internal HDD(kind of defeats the purpose of recording to two diff mediums)

2. transfer CF Card>Portadrive(expensive i know, especially with my luck, since i bought the CF Card, i'll prolly never have another 722 HDD error again and prolly wasting my money :P )

3. transfer from CF Card>722 external firewire HDD

like i said, i like the reviews i read of the portadrive, especially since it has sweet verification stuff and i know my buddy Jon Merin runs one with great success, and they transfer cf card>portadrive HDD at 16/mbs, thats VERY quick and id never need to worry about the card being transferred/formatted/ready to go before the next set started. the card would be transferred/formatted in about 6 mins or so depending on what sample rate id be running :)

BUT the external firewire HDD option is cheaper and more convenient since it is bus powered :)

wonder how much more, if any, does the 722 suck up battery when running BOTH the internal HDD and the CF card ??? wonder what its like powering the internal HDD the cf slot AND the external, bus-powered, firewire drive ???

Just so you know, from what I have read you have to have AC power to the 722 to be able to mirror to an external firewire HDD/DVDRAM drive. Can't do it off battery only. So option #3 is out.

No AC-power needed. But the 722 outputs battery voltage or feed voltage to the FW bus. Most FW peripherals wants 12V so they will not be happy with battery 7,2V.

I believe the external feature is mainly aimed at film people that needmake DVD-Roms for the postprocessing. These people generally have radio receivers, mixer, several recorders and perhaps radio transimitter mounted on a cart. On the cart they use a large 12V lead battery to run the whole day. This 12V Battery would supply enough power for the FW peripheral.

Personally, I have have exactly zero problems with the internal hard disk. I run only to that without second thoughts.

My idea of setup for the kind of situation Bean describes is to add a sealed 12V lead battery in the bag. With two along to a festival you could run all day on one battery while the other is at base camp recharging. I would keep a largish battery in the 722 as safety against loose connections and such. Once at base I would have a portable hard disk and backup to that one (backing up one days recording takes just one command and a short wait). A 40 GB harddisk holds about 80 hours at 44.1/24.

I still recommend setting start a new file on error instead of stop.

The simplest thing, and possibly cheapest may be one more CF Card...  Large of course..

Do the transfers at night when you get home... 2 8gig cards should cover even a big day of recording and you already have at least 1 4 gig card...

All you need to do is take your laptop to hte Festivals and you should be set.

Extra Drives - mirroring etc may seem cool but if it taxes battery power or distracts from having fun it is a waste IMO.  I'd drop another $150 on a CF card and go from there...

You always have the Hard drive with 40 gigs available..

This issue seems like someting a 702 user would be more concerned with - you are overanalyzing this Bean..
