Crowd noise -- what can be done?

Howdy tapers...

I run my at831's up at about 10-11 feet usually and have been very satisfied with the recording of the band/singers/music, etc, but am frustrated at the crowd noise I hear from what I guess is underneath. Now usually I'm not taping in the best venues (mostly at a place called The Bottleneck in Lawrence Kansas), but I'm usually taping acoustic acts.

Do I just need bigger windscreens? Should I mount the mics in a pringle's can and aim them at the stacks? (joking mostly). Is it my mics?

Here's how I run.. SP-CMC-2 (at831) Cardiods -> SP-SPSB-1 @ 69Hz -> Nomad JB3

Windscreens won't alleviate the problem. Go higher or closer to the stage if possible.

Crowd noise is always a problem. I agree with anodyne33. You have a very nice setup, but because you are taping acoustic sets it is much harder to drown out the crowd. Getting higher (the mics that is) should help, and the more direct - line you can get the mics toward the stacks, the greater your chance of drowing out crowd noise.

If you can get closer all the better still. The more crowd noise behind you the less for your mics to pick up.

If you find anything you try that is helpful, please come back and post what you did. Since you tape a lot at one venue, maybe something unconventional is worth trying with your mic placements. Walk around and pay attention to the sound and how it changes. You usually will find some sweet spots.

Or, pick up some hyper-cardioid capsules for your at831s.  For acoustic stuff, especially tapes made from the PA, aiming hyper-cards directly at the stacks will also help reduce a bit of the off-axis noise (i.e., talkers below and to the sides)

just what I was about to say, get some hypers as the help big time with good off axis-rejection, but crowd noise is just part of recording live music, wow, imagine that ;D

I've taped there alot myself over the years, acoustic taping is gonna be real tough in there, they have low ceilings so you cant run too high, and if you raise them all the way up, you are actually aiming over the top of the PA's. my suggestion would be to clip the mics to you and stand in front of one of the stacks. Also setting up mics in the crowd closer to stage is hard too lots of traffic you would need alot of folks to guard. I even tried running hypers in that room before thinking it would cut out most chatter, but the rear lobe caught even more chatter and bottles breaking. good luck! and maybe we'll run into each other in Lawrence some time.

Eat nothing but beans for 24 hours before the show you want to record....and then stand close to your stand to guarantee the full effect.... :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

that's what I was thinking. some kind of 6 inch long, 1/4 or a tube thing?
