I've just purchased the Core Sound PDAudio System which purports to record in true 24-192 bit paired with Len's Stealth Cardioids. Wondering if anyone has any experience with that combo.
I've been using the setup for years, but only recently got it working after discovering that the mic I had was bad (HEB from Core). Gordon Gidluck is excellent for support and you can make your own decision based on Core's reputation within a search of the board. I only wish I found this site prior to purchasing the gear as it was frankly overpromoted and underdelivered IMO. First, re: mics- if you do go with a better mic like the HEB he offers, be aware that the HEB are actually DPA mics which when you go through DPA have a Two year warranty vs the ones that Core offers. Secondly, the current configuration does work with SD card and the new generation of PDA's. That said, I wouldn't with what is available purchase this system again since there's much smaller , less expensive options out there UNLESS you'll use the PDA for other things then recording. As an example, there's the MT, Edirol, and now the new Korg compact recorder as well as other hard disc recorders coming out. It's a great time to pick up the hobby currently as the price of media is dropping and the quality of units for recording is becoming more dependable. I'm guessing that you've purchased your system second hand, because no one who's currently visiting this site after reviewing what is here re: either Core or PD-Audio would purchase that system with what is available now. RE the 192 khz, I find that if your going to be recording at the sampling rate and bit you'll have problems getting around the media capacity without changing it out unless your only taping for very limited times. As an example, using the 4 gig SD cards @ 24/96 I'm getting an hour and 50 minutes. If your using that sampling rate (192) I imagine that you'll get less then an hour- and if your doing stealth, that tend's to be an issue since trying to change the media is a hassle without drawing more attention to yourself. Also, the other issue you'll run into using a PDA is the system bus- will it even handle over 96khz with the PDA your using? I'm curious to see if that has even been done since the software developer to my knowledge has only gotten 24/96 stable recently which begs the question as to how reliable it would be at the 192 you've referenced. It's kind of after the fact though anyway since you already have the system. Also, while Roel has suggested the Pen Audio Computing board, which is excellent, I found that sinc Len is very involved with the board that it's somewhat problematic for posting anything other the how great the product that you'll get true impartiality while I was on it. I think for objectivity that this site while still monitored by Len is in my experience much more impartial on balance then what your going to see in that board. The fact that it's been over three months since your post and only Roel and myself have any feedback speaks IMO volumes about it.
