Streaming live shows
« on: January 18, 2007, 10:59:52 AM »
I have been pondering buying the Sony VAIO UX280p.  I find its mobility suits my wants quite well.  One of those would be for streaming at live shows.
My question is what do I need to stream shows.  And are there any suggestions for streaming with this type of computer.  Etc, etc.  Here is a link to the UX280p:

Thanks in advance!

neal it's really not that hard. i set up a streaming mp3 server here at school for our radio station that runs on windows. that will probably be the easiest thing to do. i use a shortcast server (free) and a program called Simplecast (free trial i think, $60 to buy) but you can find something online that will let you do it for free. of course youll need a computer and an internet connection. the comps that you are lookin at are really sweet, id love to get my hands on one of those, but really the most basic computer will do, the only thing that the software does that would effect the computer is encoding to mp3 from the input of your sound card. if i were you id get a semi-cheap laptop, get a new soundcard (not too expensive, just better than the OEM one) and use that.

im assuming that the venue/bar/etc has an internet connection they would let you use. i wouldnt count on using wireless b/c its much more flaky than just running a long cat5 cable. that would be your best bet. the shoutcast server is really not to hard to set up (its an .exe file) so all youve gotta do it run it and edit the config, and the MP3 server just runs on top of it. i would stay with windows, things get alot more complitcated when you more to linux etc

here are some links:

simple cast is really cool and works great. just dunno if you wanna spend money...
let me know if you have any questions

I run a radio server on a p3 600Mhz box. U really don't need a lot of juice in the machine to do it. What your biggest concern will be is bandwidth.

you basically have 2 options.

1) have a colocated server somewhere that can handle the number of connections you will want to serve and use your portable rig to act as the "DJ". basically you simply send the server the stream and then everyone else connects to the server. That way you dont have to worry about the amount of bandwidth the venue has or that you have at each location. The bandwidth just has to be enough to handle the stream you are sending to the server

2) "DJ" and server from the same machine. This is easily done and it is how I stream my radio station. But the big issue for you will be the available bandwidth at each venue you want to run this at. You will be hammering their connection depending on the encoded stream rates and number of users.

The other consideration will be taking Live audio and converting it on the fly. This will probably require a decent machine. I have only done it a few times when BSing over the stream but I rarely do it. My stream has been down for several months because I had to rebuild the server and i have been lazy. As a matter of fact I had everything ready to go last night and the damn thing shit the bad with read errors on boot.

If there is anything I can help you with don't hesitate to ask
