SONY MZ-RH1 + ECM-MS957
« on: December 17, 2006, 01:18:44 AM »
Hi -  I am going to be recording some local bar bands and symphonic groups using the SONY MZ-RH1 and ECM-MS957.  I plan to get as close in as I can get with the single mic at 90 or 120 degrees X-Y depending on the soundstage.  I will be recording in PCM for an upload to my PC as a WAV file.  I can edit on the PC if need be and do whatever sweeteing I need.

What else do I need to know, in 1,000 words or less?  This is a learning experience for me so I am quite willing to accept a succession of errors on the road to making fine recordings.

As reference, I am fond of single point recording remembering the old Mercury "Living Presence" stereo with two Telefunkens suspended over the orchestra and the Bruno Walter Beethoven series for CBS with three mics.  No "hot mic'ing" the individual instruments.  Sounds "more like real" to me and is way easier to do, once I find that sweet spot.

Any help from folks who have done similar recording will be so welcome.

TIA

Thanks for all the great input.  I got this session in Portland, OR, at the Crystal Ballroom where Freak Mountain Ramblers were performing.  A bit far back from the stage, but not all that bad for a first shot.  The gig qwas 2007-01-06.  Cheers.
