media server organization?

For you guys running HD based media server:  how are you organizing your shows?

If I suck at using search, let me know.  I couldn't find any threads that addressed this.

I can answer you secondhand as co-admin of a media server, but I do not have direct physical contact with it (I access it via RDP).

The shows to be streamed are in a single "stream" folder by artist and follow the LMA naming convention (e.g. gd1972.mic_info.mp3f)

Each show has a playlist generated for it and a "last song" which is a segue to the next show to be played (kind of a PSA announcement).

The shows queued for processing (to the "stream" folder) are kept in a separate folder with text files, etc. until they are processed.

The entire show database is on SQL 2005 and reports to a web page what is playing, and what is queued up next ~ this can be seen at www.biscoradio.com.

Checking in too.  I'd really love to find some software that will help me organize and play my FLAC's.  Something like iTunes, but would allow multiple locations for files - and it would allow me to read/update the FLAC metadata.  Anyone know of anything?  I think I would pay money for a FLAC iTunes...

I'm sure your solution works well George, it just seems like too much work for what I am looking for.

Update:  Anyone ever try MediaMonkey?  http://www.mediamonkey.com

I haven't done much about this since I originally asked.  I bought a Dlink NAS so I have a .5T RAID and I consolidated a bunch of shows off of 5 smaller drives.  The Dlink supports UPnP so it will provide access to stored media to any DLNA client.

I think the ~/artist/show structure is probably the best thing with bit rate indicated in the folder name.  What I have now is all the show directories at the top level so adding a level for artist seems sensible.   I don't think I'll spend a lot of time putting together playlists.  I'm going to look into the UPnP features and see if the discovery mechanism examines flacs and waves with title info in the header chunk.

Thansk for pointing out mediamonkey.  This afternoon I'll see how well it plays with the Dlink UPnP advertised files.

I haven't been able to locate a UPnP plugin for foobar - do you know of one?

BTW, thanks for the samplitude link in that other thread.
