Sell the turntable??
« on: April 14, 2007, 08:33:55 PM »
I find myself listening to more SSACD and DVD-A these days.  I only have 20 or so LP's and listen to maybe a handful of them (when I decide to fire up the turntable).  The sound is great, but I find myself needing to stock up on $100 in cleaning supplies and stuff and you can purchase 2-3 CD's for every LP.

sounds like you kind of already decided that you wouldn't miss it too much

i have no idea how much your turntable is worth, though.  if a lot, then selling it would seem to be a good idea to me.  why have an expensive thing that doesn't get used, when you could put that money towards something that will get used a lot more?

Just with the kid I find myself w/o the nice 1hr+ listening sessions that allowed me to play a full LP.  Another is the fact I've gotten ripped on a few used LP purchases and end up buying new at $30-40 (that buys a lot more music).

I think I'm going to take my best sounding LP (Brothers in Arms) and buy the CD and compare after level adjusting.  So far I've compared a few and with the new gear the sound is nearly the same.  These new Odyssey amps are fantastic!

Just that vinyl sounds SO DAMN GOOD!  Just not sure I have time for it any longer  :'(

Now I dont have the table yet so I cant comment there, but I have found a couple of local used stores, where I have gotten some vinyl that is free of any signs of use, for a couple of bucks....there is still some bad condition type stuff there, but you can find some quality stuff as well.

Your right though, new vinyl costs through the roof when compared to the CD equivalent, when you take into account all the cleaning supplies needed

Personally I am getting the turntable to see if I can be sold on the fantastic sound that vinyl can bring.  If, when I take into account the cleaning supplies, the trouble getting the titles you want when you want and the time to enjoy it, and that isnt offset by this huge airy sound that I wont be able to achieve with my system without a ton more $$$$ dumped into it....then I would get rid of it...

Either way I am looking forward to giving it an honest shot though...something about the scavenger in me likes the idea of record shows, used shops, etc...to find that title that you want....

Hopefully your luck will be better than mine, but you probably have more local shops than I.  There are only a few that had a decent selection of used, but it was all trashed.

While I would have expected the vinyl rig to sound that much better with the new gear, it just seems the digital got closer (larger soundstage, improved depth of image, and extended highs).  I'll probably wait until the tube pre gets here to make a final decision.

I find myself in the exact opposite position.  Playoff hockey in HD w/ the sound off and some vinyl spinning is my cuirrent favorite pastime.  I haven't listened to a cd (except in the car) in weeks.  I bought my turntable last year and didn't use it a ton but in the last week I've put many hours on it and enjoy more with each spin.  I don't buy a lot of used vinyl but have a whole stack that a guy gave to me a couple years ago.  Luckily for me he cared for his records.  I've also found new lp prices to be quite competitive w/ new cd prices too.  I went to a local shop yesterday and purchased 8 lps and a cd for just over a hundred dollars.  Two of those were Sonic Youth deluxe editions, each containing 4 lps.  And one was Wilco's A Ghost Is Born double lp.  As far as cleaning goes I use only a Mobile Fidelity record brush.  I wouldn't give up on the turntable yet Scott.

In my experiences, the best digital rig cannot hold a candle to a really good vinyl setup. I'm not talking about these $30k tables either. A Rega P9 with a Dynavector XV-1 and a substantial standalone phono pre and you are into some serious business. Granted, that is still a good amount of cash, but the results are stellar.

By the way, if any of you vinyl guys are into bluegrass and have not yet purchased the Alison Krauss "So Long So Wrong" and the "Live" albums, I highly suggest that you do. Even if you are not that big of a bluegrass fan, these two albums sound fantastic.

Keep it.  Just make time for yourself to listen.

I repositioned my setup to my home-office where I do alot of work instead of the living room.  It now gets much more use.

Nope, I wouldn't sell it but the choice is yours. I make the time for playback when I can. If I am in a rush I will usually listen to CD or DVD-A though because it is easier. As far as sound though, forget about it. You have to spend a LOT of money to compete with a modest analog rig. I will say that your 640P is the weak link at the moment, I just traded up & there was a noticeble difference in quality.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

Mics: Telefunken Elam 260, 61, 62, MBHO KA200, KA500 > Niant PFA's, AKG C34L-MS

Decks: Tascam DR-2d, Zoom F8

Old rig: Recording: AKG C34 & AKG CK1X or CK2X > MK46 > 460 > Aeta Mix2000 > Sound Devices 702

Playback: Thorens TD125, Denon DVD-2900> Bel Canto DAC-1 > Audible Illusions 3B > Rogue Atlas >ZU Wax Shotgun> Hyperion 938

Access to old music.

Let's face it, the master tapes from the 70's and beyond are donesville.  The record companies should have archived sealed vinyl because that's where the music is preserved.  The tapes are gone, but vinyl has clearly shown its ability to survive if well taken care of.  I believe less than 10% of the music made before 1960 is available on compact disc.  That's our country's musical heritage and old vinyl records are the only way to hear it.

GEMM is a good way to shop for new and used records, especially if there's no local source.  I have not had good experiences with vinyl reissues.  I'll buy later pressings (like from the 80's) of older records, but recent reissues of classic albums usually don't hold up to the original records.   I find myself spending less and getting more with vinyl purchases.

I'd recommend listening to the Anti-Cable speaker cables while the system breaks in.  Go back to the Canare once everything is burned in.  I don't think there will be much of a comparison though.

I also believe a modest vinyl rig is hard to beat with digital.  A typical digital player can't even keep up with the P1.

Pretty hard with a high need 18 week old  :(

I plan on giving it a few weeks, but the thought crossed my mind last night when switching between a few CD's and LP's.  The local used vinyl shops are a good 45min away and yes they let you take a look at it.  It is both the quality they stock and genre they have that SUCK.  Much more techno and dance music.  Was only able to find a nice Warren Zevon LP.

thanks fellas

my wife and I have a system worked out where she lets me go listen for an hour and a half every night while she nurses the baby and gets her in her crib. (my listening room is down the road from my house). I have to have my listening time or I am a bundle of nerves at night. it is my way to wind down.

Once done reading to Ryder while the wife nurses him, I'm doing the same.

I went and ordered some more Disc Doctor Miracle cleaner.  I'm sure I'll be keeping for now.
