Problem encoding 24bit wav to flac
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:27:05 PM »
My flac frontend wont encode my 2448 wav files to flac. It works fine for the 1644 files, but is giving me this when i try to convert the 2448 files:

are you using CDWave???     http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,69259.0.html

also... from the flac documentation :

--sector-align   Align encoding of multiple CD format files on sector boundaries. This option is only allowed when encoding files all of which have a 44.1kHz sample rate and 2 channels. With --sector-align, the encoder will align the resulting .flac streams so that their lengths are even multiples of a CD sector (1/75th of a second, or 588 samples). It does this by carrying over any partial sector at the end of each file to the next stream. The last stream will be padded to alignment with zeroes.

Don't sweat the non-standard 'fmt' sub-chunk messages - basically means your editing software stores some additional (non-critical) data in the WAV header that FLAC doesn't handle, usually proprietary tags of one kind or another.

As for the other message re unsupported compression type...

Are these 2-channel WAV files?  Most of the references I've scanned so far in a Google search relate to this error with multi-channel WAVs.

Also, if you're using CD-Wave, try ticking the "save in alternate 24-bit format" checkbox.

one other thing to note is that you are using a very old version of FLAC.  the current version is v1.1.4.  With the newer version, you'll get better compression ratios and quicker encoding time.

I'd update to the latest and try again.

Thanks to all that responded.
Brian- I dont think i had ever noticed the 24B Alt box before.  I definately never had it checked.
Jason-Then i dl'd the newer version of flac.  Thanks. It coverted them, but it did give me this error report.

Is that just a normal sector align error, like the quote that Pigiron wrote?
Since these are 48 i dont need to worry about them, right?

Thanks again,

Sector alignment only matters for 16bit, 44.1kHz files. And then it only matters if you plan on burning them to a CD.

yup def have to uncheck the Align on SB box in front end for anything above 44.1

also - with the new version of FLAC you do NOT need to check the save to alt 24bit format with CDWave - there was a thread around somewhere detailing more info

I did have the Align SB box unchecked, and still got that most recent error.

Nope. Everything is cool.
Thanks to everyone who helped me out!...ive already cleared off 10 gigs of space.
Now that ive finally got them into 24bit flacs, where do most people host there 24 bit BT's?
I'd like to put some up before i completely remove them from my HD.

archive is a great place if the band allows it

you can circulate 24bit on any tracker, just be sure to make it clear exactly what it is because a lot of people need the guidance
