Coresound Cardioids > H320
« on: June 04, 2007, 11:15:47 PM »
hey everyone. proud to say this is my first post on this great forum. i've been a member of DAT-Heads for the past 10 years and i'm really glad to see a thriving alternative to that list which is almost as dead as DAT itself!

the question i am asking in this post is: can i use coresound cardioids w/an iriver H320? i have been a longtime Sony TCD-D7 user, those things are practically bullet-proof, but i am planning to get something more modern since the D7 is really noisy when loading/unloading tapes and i'm worried about it failing in the field. i've made my mind up about getting the H320 but it only has line-in. on my D7 i use the line-in for coresound binaurals but i use the mic-in for the cardioids because they need that extra dB boost. has anyone used this setup (CSC>H320)? thanks a lot for any info.  :)

welcome ;),
usually all 1/8"(3.5mm) terminated electret condenser mics can be used with the irivers combined mic/line-in which supplies 3-4V to your mics.

I don´t have the coresound cardiods but I had no issues with any of my 6 electret condenser mics in the past when using my iriver.
of course you can also use a battery box between your mics and the iriver´s mic/line-in so your mics get properly powered with 9V (or 12V).
hope you rockboxed your iriver..makes recording very easy.
;)

Can you use the iRiver preamp with Rockbox?  I've got a little older build and it disables the built in preamp so I use a Sound Professionals preamp.

Of course you can use the iriver´s internal preamp with rockbox ;).
I always use the latest build+REP.

thanks for the response. i did a little more reading when i didn't get an immediate response to my post and i found that the rockbox software does have some type of dB boost setting. i use a battery box w/my mics but when i go line-in on the D7 using the cardioids the levels don't seem high enough so i have to use the built-in preamp (mic-in) to get my levels where i think they should be. when using my binaurals in the past i always went line-in since the signal was high enough without going through the preamp.

i don't actually have an iriver yet. if anyone lurking this post has an h320 to sell me, by all means PM me. ebay seems to be a feeding frenzy for that model and that just drives the prices up. i taped a hell of a lot more in the '90s but it's always nice to have a device when i actually get to some shows. a few bands i'm into will be touring in the fall so i'd like to be ready w/an iriver by that time. i'm still in the research stage right now.  :D

I would go for a H120/H140 cause it has optical in/out and is smaller in size AND it looks better ;).

the H320 is a bit ugly but you've got to love the color screen, that's what i'm hung up on.  :P
