Can C.A. STC-11s be used w/o pre?
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:22:45 AM »
....on an Edirol R-09?
Noob-ly speaking, I thought (in the hundreds of posts I've been tearing through) that Chris
said 1-9V for the STC-11s and GuySonic (sonicsolutions review) has listed 2.5V phantom power
from the R-09.

$$ is a little tight (I plan on getting either the 9000 or 9100), as is time to the show I wanted to use them on (18th). I've written Chris, but no response yet.

I've been working through pro sites as I can, but any links to the gain (pun intended) of using
a pre would also be greatly appreciated.

Much thanks for everyones help!

As long as you have a source powering the mics they will work.  You're better off with a battery box or preamp to provide 9V.  That seems to be optimum for these types of mics I believe.  2.5V will run them, just maybe not as well as 9V.

You can use them using mic-in.

Yes your mics can be used with out a preamp on the edirol. With the preamp your noise floor goes down and your dynamic range goes up. But it all depends on what type of shows you want to record if they are very VERY loud I would say go mic in, on the edirol you will be fine.

In addition on Chris' advice, you would of course need a batterybox when using line in. Line in expects an active signal.
