FWIW, Passing On A Learning Experience
« on: September 03, 2007, 08:26:45 PM »
This is simply a post to let everyone know of a tiny negative experience I had on Thursday night, so that maybe ya'll can learn from my bad luck and won't repeat my experience.

To save room in my bag, I'd gotten into the habit of leaving my Joe Meek shocks connected to my Shure Vert bar on the end of the stand.  It was kinda convenient in that there was one less thing to setup and tear down.

Well, turns out it wasn't such a great idea because after the show on Thursday night, I went in to take a leak before hitting the road and stood my stand in the corner.  While I was standing there, the bottom of the stand slid on the slippery floor and fell to the ground and broke one of the shocks off.  They're plastic and sturdy enough, but not made for that kind of abuse.

The Joe Meek shocks are only $20 apiece so no big deal to replace, but of course I'd just as soon not have to replace it.  Obviously in the future, I'll take the shocks off and store them so this doesn't happen again.  Might still leave the vert bar connect on the end of the stand though.

Anyhow, just a heads up if anyone else leaves the shocks hooked up like I was doing for awhile.

Steve

+T for your troubles. Maybe it's time to invest in some beefy avantone mounts ;). I hear you though, I usually leave both my ck1 and 414 shocks on my stand as well, but keeping them in a bag would probably require a third gear bag for me :-\. Definitely something to be aware of though.

+T for your troubles.  I ordered a JM27 mount recently but what I received is metal like the C Series instead of black plastic like I expected.  I'm not complaining though.  ;D

It used to be called "The Motorman's Friend" and was worn by subway motormen as they had a twelve hour shift with no breaks.  That was before they had a union.

I've been taking my JoeMeeks shocks off.  The plastic threads scare me as it is.  I am always worried about stripping them.  You should consider  something like hanging a Crown Royal bag off your gear bag with the shocks in them.  I leave my vert bar on my stand all the time though.  No issues there.  As a backup I always carry my Neumann clips in my bag too just in case the JM shocks break  :-)

get a metal thread set to insert into the plastic threads, like a 5/8-27female -> 5/8-27 male. It'll protect the plastic threads.

i broke a schempz a20s mount right where the threads end, and the ears of the swivel start to form.
I fixed it by drilling thru the bottom of the mentioned metal thread set, and thru the plastic mount components. I then filled the entire works (not the metal threads) with jb-weld, and thru-bolted the whole back together.

its too tough to describe, but, in the end, the metal thread set made the repair possible, and still protect the plastic threads, though is now a permanent part of the a20s mount.

I use atlas quick connects on my A20s shocks so teardown is a breeze and I never have to worry about stripping the plastic threads.

For the H-85 shocks, I leave permanantly attached the threaded metal studs from the wintech clamps, quick setup/teardown and no stripping.

Jeez the testimonials on that website had me rotflmao.

and its a dry floor.  :D

I'm not sure if people have the same habit that I have, but when I start to thread two pieces together, I first twist in the opposite direction from the direction required.  You'll feel the two mating threads kinda click (one thread drops into place relative to the other thread) when in the right position relative to each other.  Once they drop into place like that, they're positioned for the threads to mate properly together.

I won't start threading the two pieces together until I know for sure that both are properly positioned and this technique gets it 98% of the time and obviously, since you're twisting in the opposite direction, you can't mess up the threads.  Using this technique, I never cross thread a piece, unless I overtighten...but plastic should only be tightened hand tight to prevent that.

Anyway, I've never worried about screwing up the threads on my plastic threaded Meek shocks because I never cross thread anything.
