Grey Cable
« on: September 09, 2007, 03:32:47 PM »
The cable that allows you to mix 4 mics through a UA5...

1) Where can I find one?
2) How do I use it?
3) My buddy runs SP-C4's->XLR->Phantom II-> MIT 176's-> JB3.  Would it be easier to hook one of these bad boys http://www.fullcompass.com/product/300356.html to each of the MIT-176's?  And then run it into my JB3?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You'll need a second mic system to run into the RCA analog input on the back.  Run one set of mics thru the regular XLRs on the front of the UA5, and run the second set of mics into the analog input.  This is just like running a SBD into the back while doing mics on the front for a matrix.

You could get a mixer in front of the UA5 XLRs and mix it all down to 2 channels first...

So if I ran my SMK-H8K's->UA5-> JB3 (Optical out)

Could he run his SP-C4's->Phantom Power II->MIT 176's->UA5 (RCA)-> another Jb3?    How would he get his signal out though?  Or am I totally not understanding this?

Run you SMKs as usual.  Run his C4>PhII>XXX>UA5(RCA).  Run the optical output into your JB3.  If he wants to run his JB3 at the same time, and therefore record the same source, he would need to run from the RCA SPDIF output.  He'll need a Hosa ODL276 to convert from RCA to TOSLINK.

You'll add gain to your mics via the XLR gain knobs.  You add volume to the output of the C4s via the volume knob on the back of the UA5.  By adjusting one versus the other, you be able to adjust how much of each mic is in the 4mic mix.

Where is the RCA SPDIF?

Also.  The XXX part of running the C4's into the UA5, can it be that adapter I linked?

Thanks for the help btw. :)

Where is the RCA SPDIF?

On the back on the UA5.  It will be labeled digital output.

The XXX part of running the C4's into the UA5, can it be that adapter I linked?

I'd start with a pair of these and see if you need transformers later...

The analog RCA inputs are the red and white ones labeled "Input" and is just to the left of the "Volume" knob.  This knob will control the volume of your "Input".

The RCA SDPIF output is the one labeled "Coaxial Out".  Its orange.  I forgot the UA5 had a selector switch for Optical of Coaxial.  It may be that it will only output one digital signal and not both.  You'll have to experiment.

Either way, I think its pointless to have two JB3s.  Just run one.  After the show, you can make as many copies as you want.  The JB3 also has a way to transfer files from one to another, but I've never used this feature.

So what would we do just to run the one JB3 with the 4 mics?  Leave the RCA's in but not give them another output other than the optical?  (Same as SMK's)?

+T.

Thanks you

If I read your meaning correctly, you are correct.  Run the Optical Digital output to your JB3, it will record the 4mic mix.

FWIW, the selector switch applies to digital input only; coaxial or optical, pick one.  The UA5 will output both analog and digital signals at the same time.  'Done it many times.  If you need a manual for this there's a PDF in the archives here.

Hahah, which one do you recommend I run?  I have no idea what any of this shit means.

Thanks for the help as well :)

Digital=coaxial or optical in this case

Just run the optical output to your JB3. Mix the 4 mics with the level knobs on the front, the XLR inputs, and the Input Volume knob on the back--by the RCA inputs.

To use the setup you described, you will need an adapter cable to go from whatever the outputs on the Art Phantom box are to the RCAs on the UA5. I think that box has XLR outs so you need a dual Female XLR>Male RCA cable.

You said above that you run SMK>UA5>JB3.  I assume you know how tape with this rig...  Just keep doing the same thing.

All you are doing is adding a second input to the UA5.  The UA5 acts like a mixer and will mix the 2 inputs together before outputting the combined signal from analog and both digital outputs.

Your first input is your SMK mics plugged into the XLR inputs.  The second will be the C4s>PhII>XXX plugged into the analog RCA inputs.
