SP-CMC-8 vs Church STC-11
« on: September 21, 2007, 04:50:56 PM »
Hello Board:
After all these years searching for the best taping MIC, I have ended with various experiments.
Before asking why not the DPA´s ? too much $ for use them 1 time on a  3-4 month time lapse

Music:
Rock/Pop Metal

Taping Situtaion:
strictly stealth

Venues:
Large Arena, Auditorium, Large hall.

My previous rigs:
OKMII/R>A3>M1 = Great results, taped for +5 years!
pros: small, you can tape very loud stuff and clipping will never be present
cons: for me..... a  little bit lack of treble, omni capsule screamer, singer near you will ruin your souvenir.

time for an update!
so ended with:

SP-CMC-8>AT8533>DEN-PS2-MINI>M1
pros: great overall sound.
cons: on significantly loud shows you will have slight clipping on the bass drum!, yes supposed they dont clip, yes they do on loud stuff,  too bulky to sneak arghh what a pain stacking all the stuff inside your jeans legs wherever (DEN-PS2 and the XLR to Mini adaptors)

only taped one show
SP-CMC-8>ST-9100>M1
pros: great overall sound.
cons: at the moment none

Now....
Chris Church Mics seem to be great MICS  the  STC-11 model
Any info here from users how had/have both MICS? SP-CMC-8 and the STC-11 along with the ST-9100?
or perhaps other recomened stealth MIC small size?
Ed  ;)

I run SP-CMC-8 > St9100 > M1 or R-09 and while the quality is good, I am looking for improved bass response.  I think you are right to try out some other cardoid mics.  I just bought a pair of MM HLSC-1 and you may want to consider them as well as the Church Cards.  Everyone raves about the Church mics so much and since I have his pre-amp, I think I may sell the SP-CMC-8's and try Chris' mics.  I'd be interested in your opinion if you do make the switch.  I have yet to use the MM HLSC-1 mics....just came on Thursday.

I Kill Cars from Austin.

Recorded with ST-11 (omni cap)>9100 pre>iRiver (rockboxed).....  I think bass response isn't the issue here.  Card caps may be somewhat different....

Please post how you liked your MM HLSC-1 mics...I am looking at a pair of those right now.  Also, do those mics have interchangeable caps?  It didn't look like they did...

I don't think the caps are interchangable and I know that's why a lot of people go for the AT's, but I think you are sacrificing sound quality at the expense of being able to change out the caps. Just my opinion.

I'll report further once I pop the cherry on the MM HLSC-1 mics on Saturday.

I have seriously bad after sales experience with MM sometime back.
My recommendation would be for you to get the actual Sennheiser MKE-40s instead of the MM-HLSC or watever they call it. Mike just buys the caps from Sennheiser (whom they no longer will provide him), and fits them into his own tubings.

That said, those Senns rock...

?? How can they still make the mics if Sennheiser don't provide the caps anymore? Confused.

My experience with MM was smooth and flawless.  No complaints. Smooth transaction.

The recording with the Sens this weekend turned out fairly good, but I had some issues with wind noise.  I like the results over the SP-CMC-8's.  I'll try and post a sample tonight.
