Bass Roll off and recording levels
« on: October 12, 2007, 02:59:16 PM »
Hi!

I have a question on Bass Roll off and recording levels...  I run an edirol R09 + MM Batterybox + MM HLSC-1 mics. I record at input level 16 which seems good for rock music. But my recordings seem to be a bit heavy on the bass IMO. What is the best way to get a more balanced recording?  Using bass roll off and if so what is the appropiorate bass roll off frequency given my equipment. Are there other variables to consider too to get less heavy bass? (position of the mics, recording level etc?)

Thanx!

i don't have that box, i have a soundpros but i set it at like 96 or whatever the setting is around that
it seems to work pretty good for me, only a couple of times had i wished i had set higher

some mic set ups will help with bass, i want to say xy will cut down bass some

Hello,

Well, I'm quite surprised. That's the first time I've ever heard about heavy bass with the MM- HLSC-1. My rig is pretty much the same as yours. Most of the times, my recordings are a little bit on the lightweight bass side of the house. This rig can provide  very detailed and pristine results, but like most of HLSC-1 users, I could use more bass on my recordings. Don't you ever use bass roll off with those mics unless if you want a very thin sounding tape.
Take care ;D

I'm a bass freak and I like the bass response the MM HLSC-1's give me in comparison to my AT943's.  My ST-9100 has the bass roll off option, but I have yet to use it.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Compared to the U853's (SP-CMC-4U) I find that the HLCS-1's have less bass.  Proximity will make a difference, too.  How close were you when you got the heaps of bass?

Through trial and error, I have found that I like my bass roll-off set at 96 for outdoor-amphitheatre shows most recently DMB at West Palm. For the Gainesville DMB show in an indoor setting (O'Connell Center) I used the 107 setting. I have no experience with the HLSC-1s however.
SP-CMC-2 (AT831s) --> SP-SPSB-1 (with levels & bass roll-off) --> iRiver H320 Rockboxed
SP-CMC-2 --> SP-SPSB-1 --> MZ-M100
