Microtrack and more CF card problems
« on: October 19, 2007, 01:49:20 AM »
So I'm thinking maybe I should invest in another brand of card.... unless it's not a card issue....

Background:
I have a microcenter branded 2gb cf card.

When I first got it I was having "media not found" errors and other weird things, which I think I posted about a while back.  Then it was suggested that I update the firmware, so I did and the media not found errors seemed to disappear.

I recorded a show a while ago.  I got around to dumping it onto my computer two days ago.  After copying it to my computer I deleted it (through windows).  When I booted the MT, the files were magically still in the file list.  So I went in and deleted them on the microtrack.  Everything looked fine.

Recent Issues:
I brought the MT to tape a show two days ago.  I'm recording spdif in from a bm2p+ UA5 in 16/44.1.  I check the settings to make sure they are 16 bit on the MT.  Then I check the record time and it says 1:08:00.  I figure this must be an error because I should have about 3 hours left on it.  So I just decide to let it record.  Well lo and behold, 1 hour and 8 minutes into the set, it shuts down.  I pop out the card, pop it back in again, turn the MT back on, and check the recording time.  It now says 00:00:00.  So I'm thinking wtf, I know I should have had 3 hours on there.

Then I take the card out again, and put it back in and it says "Media not found".  This happens a few times before I give up.  After the show, I gave the CF card to my friend to see what the record time read in his MT, and it also read 00:00:00.  So two different microtracks were reading no recording time left.

I checked my UA5 to make sure I didn't accidentally move the switch to 48 or something - I didn't.  It was set to 44.1 like it's always been.

So I get home to dump the fraction of the show onto my hard drive.  It's only taken up 835mb of the card!!  Clearly there was some type of error somewhere.  But is it the card being stupid or a problem with the way the MT works?

Then I put the card back into my MT, format it and check the record time - now it's 1:27:00.  I format it again and the same thing.  So its still not reading 3 hours like it is supposed to.

I took the MT with this card AND my JB3 out to a show tonight, and recorded with both of them.  Well as soon as I pressed record on the MT, the max time all of the sudden said 3 hours, and the show recorded fine without stopping at 1:27.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on?

also be advised that the total record time will not show up 100% correct because it shows you the total record time till you hit the 2gb mark
so if you end up getting a card thats bigger then 2gb don't be alarmed if the record time doesn't show as 4hr or whatever it should be
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

So you think it's definitely the card and not the recorder or something I'm doing wrong?  I'm gonna get at least a 4 gig card... should I abandon this one altogether?

Goto Bestbuy or Circuit City and get a Kingston.  If it doesn't work, take it back.  Simple as that.
