Is there a small recorder with 7+ volt mic input?
« on: December 05, 2007, 06:04:20 PM »
I'm thrilled with all of the new offerings for stealthable digital recorders, but also a bit frustrated. My H140 is on the blink and I'm considering something new. I'd prefer NOT to have to use my battery box or preamp. I want a small, all-in-one solution that I can plug my mics (with 3.5mm plug) into. Since I like to record loud rock music, it needs to have enough plug-in power to adequately run the mics. What I can't understand is why all of the offerings seem to offer only around 4v. It seems so basic that a recorder should offer around 9v so it can provide enough dynamic range for mics. Does anyone know of an option that is under $500. I still haven't heard how many volts the new Sony provides. Apparently the new Marantz only offers around 4v.

The new Marantz is 5V, according to the specs.; I think the new Sony and the Edirol are 2.5V...Maybe the MT-2?  I think I read that it will have more power?

What mics are you trying to run?

I've successfully run Sennheiser MKE2 on Edirol R09 (2.5v through a 2.2k resistor).  5v is *plenty* for any mic, including DPA406x.

Well, if the MT outputs phantom (or at least 30v, lol) then you could just use standard AT8533 adapters to drive any electret.

BTW, I agree with you that using plug-in power is great for convenience.  Less gear, and no need to remember to check the battery.

I have been wondering about this a lot, since I just got one of the new Marantz recorders with the 5V.  But some other threads and conversations I have had led me to believe I should always use a battery box or pre-amp.  It would be great to use plug-in and have such a light set-up.  Also, I go to a lot of jazz, which maybe doesn't require tons of power to the mics (i.e. a bit on the quieter side)?

you donĀ“t need a bbox as the marantz provides 5V on mic-in and it has a 2 step attenuator built in (-12dB and -24dB).
am thinking of trying the 620 too and use it with my dpa 4061 on mic-in for sielnt and loud shows.
1st: SONY PCM-M10 + DPA 4060's + DPA MPS 6030 power supply (microdot)
2nd: iPhone 5 + "Rode iXY" microphone/"Zoom IQ5" microphone
